Foam Fire Extinguishers

Foam fire extinguishers tackle Class A and Class B fires with remarkable effectiveness. These versatile units work by creating a protective barrier that smothers flames and prevents re-ignition, making them essential for workplaces that store flammable liquids or deal with ordinary combustible materials. B-foam extinguishers are designed specifically for petrol, diesel and oils, creating a seal over burning liquids to cut off oxygen supply.

Different types of fires foam extinguishers put out

Foam extinguishers fight Class A fires brilliantly: wood, paper and textiles. But here's the thing with liquid fires. B-foam extinguishers are designed specifically for petrol, diesel and oils. They create a seal over the burning liquid and cut off the oxygen supply. A-foam types? They're primarily for solid materials and aren't as effective on liquids. So you need to choose the right foam for your specific fire risks.

Foam extinguishers have been di-electrically tested, so are safe for use on or near live electrical equipment (though they will likely damage the equipment too!).

For kitchen fires involving cooking oils, wet chemical extinguishers are your best option.

How do foam fire extinguishers work?

When you discharge a foam extinguisher, it releases a mixture of water and foam concentrate under pressure. This creates a thick, stable foam that spreads across the fire's surface. The foam works in three ways: it cools the burning material, creates a barrier that prevents oxygen from feeding the fire, and forms a seal that stops flammable vapours from escaping.

The P50 B-Foam Extinguisher's unique properties make it particularly effective on liquid fires. Unlike water, which can spread burning liquids and exacerbate fires, foam floats on top of liquids and creates a protective barrier.

Installing foam extinguishers

B-Foam extinguishers are ideal for garages, workshops, factories, and storage areas where flammable liquids are stored. They're commonly found in vehicle maintenance facilities, manufacturing plants, and warehouses that handle oils, solvents, or fuels.

Consider using B-Foam extinguishers in areas where both ordinary combustibles and flammable liquids are present. This dual capability means you can protect against multiple fire types with a single extinguisher.

Are foam extinguishers safe for people?

Modern foam extinguishers are generally safe when used correctly. The foam concentrate is designed to be less harmful than older formulations; however, prolonged contact with skin and eyes should still be avoided. Always read the safety instructions and ensure proper ventilation when using any fire extinguisher.

After using a foam extinguisher, clean the affected area thoroughly as the foam can leave residue that may damage surfaces if left untreated.

What sizes do foam extinguishers come in?

We stock foam extinguishers in various sizes to match your specific needs. Popular sizes include 6-litre and 9-litre units, which offer excellent coverage for most commercial applications. Smaller 3-litre models are well-suited for vehicles and compact spaces, while larger 45-litre wheeled units are available for industrial sites that require maximum firefighting capacity.

Choose your size based on the area you're protecting and the types of fires you might encounter. Larger spaces with higher fire risks benefit from bigger extinguishers that provide longer discharge times and greater coverage.

Servicing foam extinguishers

Foam extinguishers require annual servicing by a qualified technician. This involves checking the pressure, inspecting the foam concentrate, and testing the discharge mechanism. The foam concentrate typically needs to be replaced every five years, even if the extinguisher hasn't been used.

Regular maintenance ensures your extinguisher will work when you need it most. We offer comprehensive servicing packages that ensure your fire safety equipment remains in optimal working order, helping you meet regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I use a foam extinguisher on electrical fires?

Foam extinguishers can be used on electrical fires only if they've passed the 35kV conductivity test.

Use water mist or foam in general office areas with live electrical equipment. The only use for CO2 is generally in server rooms or areas where water-based extinguishers might damage valuable electrical equipment.

Always check your extinguisher's specific certification before using it near electrical equipment.

How long does a foam extinguisher last before needing replacement?

A foam extinguisher should be replaced around the 10-year mark. After 5 years, replace your current foam extinguishers with a suitable alternative, such as water mist.

By replacing AFFF foam extinguishers now, organisations can pre-empt regulatory control that will soon exist. The disposal of AFFF foam is highly regulated due to the harmful environmental consequences of the foam entering water courses and ecosystems. The cost of disposal of this type of foam is also escalating as demand rises. For more information about responsible disposal practices, see our guide on AFFF foam extinguisher disposal.

Regular annual servicing helps determine when replacement becomes more cost-effective than continued maintenance.

What's the difference between foam and powder extinguishers?

Foam extinguishers are only suitable for fire classes A and B, while powder extinguishers are also suitable for fire class C.

Powder extinguishers create a mess, reduce visibility when discharged and can have detrimental health effects, so they should be used outside. Water mist extinguishers are a better choice for inside. For the pros and cons of foam extinguishers and powder extinguishers, please refer to our Foam vs. Powder Extinguishers information.

Are foam extinguishers safe for people and the environment?

Many older foam extinguishers contain the fluorosurfactant PFOA as their additive, which is known to cause cumulative environmental damage (thus the nickname 'forever chemicals'). Eco foam extinguishers use improved formulations that are less harmful to the environment.

After using a foam extinguisher, thoroughly clean the affected area, as the foam can leave residue. Always ensure proper ventilation when using any fire extinguisher, and avoid prolonged skin contact with the foam.

What happens during a foam extinguisher service?

Every 12 months, you must have your fire extinguishers serviced by a qualified technician. During the annual service, the technician will replace the headcap seal, verify the correct operation of the headcap safety pin, test the pressure gauge, and replace any O-rings in the junction of the valve and hose or horn.

A visual check of the extinguisher's condition and the instruction label completes the job. Finally, the technician will complete the maintenance label, which records the service history of the extinguisher. You'll also need monthly visual inspections between professional services to check the pressure gauge, safety pin, and overall condition.

What is a foam fire extinguisher used for?

What is a foam fire extinguisher used for?

AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foams) Foam Fire Extinguishers are suitable to fight burning solids such as wood as well as liquid fires such as burning petrol. The foam has the ability to seep over the burning liquid or to soak into burning materials such as settees. The water content in the foam cools the fire whilst the foam itself starves the fire of oxygen. Foam fire extinguishers are ideal in offices and homes. Care must, however, be taken when cleaning up after a foam discharge or when disposing of foam extinguishers, as the AFFF foam is carcinogenic and can poison surface water, such as rivers. The extinguishers should always be passed on for responsible recycling. Usually, your extinguisher servicing engineer will remove your old extinguishers for a small charge.
What colour is a foam fire extinguisher?

What colour is a foam fire extinguisher?

While the main body of a AFFF foam fire extinguisher is usually red, the identification field will be cream coloured. Britannia's new fluorine-free foam alternative have maintained this cream colouration. This helps to identify the foam extinguisher. For further information on extinguisher industry standard colour coding, take a look at our fire extinguisher types poster .
Are foam extinguishers being phased out?

Are foam extinguishers being phased out?

Traditional AFFF foam extinguishers have been phased out by Safelincs and a ban on their manufacture and use is expected to be announced imminently. This is because the fluorine compounds (PFAS) contained in their fire-fighting foam are harmful to the environment, ecosystems and to human health. AFFF extinguishers have been popular for their ability to tackle a multitude of common fire risks. In many cases, AFFF foam extinguishers can now be substituted with Water-Mist extinguishers, or Britannia’s P50 Fluorine-Free Foam alternatives.
