Wiring Explained

Mains powered Ei Electronics smoke and heat alarms require a 230V AC power supply and up to 12 alarms can be hardwire interlinked in one system.

To obtain a mains power supply, each alarm can be connected to the nearest lighting circuit using 2 core and earth cable with a separate, dedicated interlink cable connecting all alarms. However, if possible it is recommended that the alarms are all powered from a dedicated circuit from the distribution board using 3 core and earth cable for safety during maintenance, as the interlink cable will carry power from live alarms on other power circuits. FAQs (9)
Q. For mains powered Aico smoke and heat alarms, when the electricity supply fails and the back up battery takes over, please can you tell me how long the battery will last in this situation?
A.

For mains powered Aico alarms with a new, fully charged lithium back up battery, the battery would last approx. 3-6 months without a mains supply. For mains powered Aico alarms with a standard alkaline back up battery, the battery would last up to a year without mains supply. If the alarm has been installed with an Ei168RC radio frequency base, please note that the Ei168RC back up battery would last approx 2 months if the power fails.

Q. My detector does not have "RC" stated at the end of the code. What does this stand for?
A.

The RC just refers to "Remote Control" as the unit can be fitted to a radio-frequency base for interconnection. The model hasn't changed but the manufacturers changed the product code slightly in reference to this.

Q. Can I upgrade an existing Ei140 series base with a Ei160 series smoke alarm?
A.

Yes, the bases for the Ei140 and Ei160 series are identical units and are interchangeable.

Q. How do you wire in the Ei140/Ei160 series of smoke alarms?
A.

To wire the units correctly you would use 2 core and earth cable to the first unit and 3 core and earth to the interconnected units. The alarms do not have to be earthed but a brass screw connector is provided so that the earth can be safety terminated.

Q. Can I link a CO detector with a Ei140 smoke alarm?
A.

Yes, we recommend the Ei261EN. You should also install a Ei159 locator to allow you to find out if the alarm was triggered by CO gas or by fire.

Q. Can I replace an Ei141 alarm with an Ei146 using the Easychange head kit, leaving the base plate in place?
A.

With the Easichange kits you can interchange the heads with the existing bases as all the bases in that series are the same. Using the tool that comes with the Easichange kit makes taking the old head off and putting the new head on quick and easy without the need for an electrician.

Q. Can the sensitivity of the Ei141(ionisation alarm) be altered as it keeps going off when I am cooking?
A.

The Ei141(ionisation alarm)is the wrong alarm to be located in the kitchen area. We would recommend a heat alarm for kitchen area. The Ei144 heat alarm gives a fire warning when the temperature at the unit reaches 58°C. Heat alarms are ideal for use in kitchens and garages, where the use of optical or ionisation alarms would lead to unwanted nuisance alarms.

Q. Why is my Mains Powered Ionisation Alarm with Hush Button Ei141 beeping? I have replaced the batteries.
A.

Check on the side of the alarm and look for the manufacture date and 'replace by' date to see if the alarm requires replacing. Otherwise try cleaning the alarm around the vents with a vacuum nozzle.

Q. How long do the batteries last in smoke alarms?
A.

The 9V alkaline batteries last 12-18 months. Lithium batteries will usually last 5x longer than their alkaline counterparts, achieving around 5 years lifetime. Some lithium cells are also rechargeable, and when used in a mains-powered alarm may last for the entire functional lifespan of the alarm. Newer alarm models may also feature a "sealed" lithium battery. These batteries are specialist components which are designed to not be removed or need replacing by the user, and have been tested by the alarm manufacturer to ensure they last for the lifetime of the alarm.

Please Note: the actual lifetime of your batteries depends on how often the alarms are tested or activated, as sounding the alarm draws more power than when the alarms are "waiting" to detect fire. You should also read your alarm's manual to make sure you only use the recommended types and brands of batteries, as failing to follow these instructions may cause the alarm to malfunction, not alerting you in the event of a fire, and might also invalidate the warranty.
