Most smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarms with replaceable batteries, often need replacing every 12-18 months depending on how many times it is activated and tested. Replacement smoke alarm batteries are often specified by the manufacturer, which can be found in the user manual and the back of the alarm.
Alkaline and lithium batteries are suitable for most alarms found around your home, it is important that alarms are in full working order so that they can properly detect fire and carbon monoxide and therefore protect your home, family, and friends against these threats.
The specification of battery required by any type of smoke alarm can be found in the user manual. It is very common that user manuals, after installation, are often thrown away. However, if the smoke alarm has a replaceable battery, this information can also be found on the back of the alarm when taken off the base plate. The use of the battery which has not been specified by the manufacturer, could damage the smoke alarm or even mean that the alarm does not function as it should.
Most smoke alarms with a replaceable battery, will have a battery compartment. When taken off the base plate, a battery compartment will be visible. The battery compartment may have a lid or the batteries may be instantly visible. If there is no compartment lid, the batteries can be taken out and replaced. If there is a compartment lid, this will need to be removed before the old batteries can be taken out, and the new ones can be inserted. Once the smoke alarm batteries have been replaced, the alarm can be reinstalled onto its base plate on the ceiling.
