Intumescent fire and smoke seals are essential for fire door assemblies. These fire door seals are fitted into existing rebates in either the door leaf or the door frame and upon contact with fire they will expand to fill the gap and create an effective barrier to smoke and fire. The smoke seal is essential as smoke spreads faster than fire and smoke inhalation is the most common injury caused by a fire. If your fire doors do not have rebates use
surface-mounted fire and smoke seals instead.

Q. Can I paint over fire door seals?
A. If your fire door seals include a brush (smoke seal), this should not be painted over. The intumescent part (the flat part) can, however, be painted over up to 5 times.
Q. How big can the gap between door and frame of a fire door be?
A. Top and sides should be between 2 and 4mm. Threshold should have a gap of less than 8mm.
Q. How can existing fire doors that have no seals be updated to conform to regulations?
A. The Surface Mounted Fire and Smoke Seal kits can be used. They can be fitted to the door or the door frame. A double door kit is available, which means that the seals would need to be fitted to the doors rather than the door frame, so that the gap between the doors is covered.
Q. Can the seals be fitted to the door instead of the frame?
A. The seals can be fitted to either the door or frame.
Q. How deep does the rebate need to be?
A. The seal require a 4mm deep rebate.
