Case Study - Goldsborough Hall

The customer

Goldsborough Hall is a private royal stately home, near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, which was saved from dereliction and developers by its current owners in 2005. It now hosts weddings and functions as well as providing luxurious accommodation in five-star suites and rooms. Visitors can indulge in a stately overnight stay or book a table to dine for lunch, afternoon tea or AA rosette dinning.

Built in the early seventeenth century, Goldsborough Hall became HRH Princess Mary's first family home in the 1920s and stands in 12 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds boasting unspoilt elevated views over the historic gardens and tranquil parkland, making it one of the most private, exclusive and beautiful places to visit in Yorkshire.

The Challenge

Goldsborough Hall

The building had been equipped with powder filled fire extinguishers which can be used on class A, B and C type fires and are safe on electrical equipment. However, one of the concerns the owners had was that, in areas of irreplaceable cultural heritage such as the Jacobean library with its oak panelling, any unfortunate fire damage could be compounded by the action of the powder.

The Solution

Safelincs introduced the owners to extinguishers that employ the latest water mist technology. These produce over 22 billion water droplets from only 1 litre of water. They create an ultra-fine mist which has superior fire-fighting capabilities. The unique nozzle creates water droplets that produce a mist that leaves almost no trace and no collateral damage.

The extinguishers are capable of tackling almost all common fires including class A, B, C, F type fires as well as fires involving live electrical equipment of up to 1000V. The water mist has the cooling effect of water and creates a "mist curtain" cutting off the oxygen supply.

The droplets are so small that they have no adverse reaction on burning liquids and fats, allowing the extinguishers to be used on class B and F fires.

Goldsborough Hall has now installed six-litre water mist extinguishers in key areas of the building.

The Benefit

The Hall’s owner Mark Oglesby was very impressed when the devices were demonstrated and is now pleased to have them installed in the heritage areas. “We also have them in the kitchen space where the risk of fire is probably the greatest. Even a small fire that is easily put out could be extremely problematic if food became contaminated. With these extinguishers, that would never be a problem.”

Case Study - Turville Grange

The Customer

Turville Grange, near Henley in Oxfordshire, is the country retreat of an influential American family. The estate covers several sites including a large regency style house and is used by the family as a residence for around six months of the year. It is looked after by seven full time staff.

The building has an interesting history with visitors that have included Jacqueline Kennedy and Noel Coward.

The Challenge

A listed building, built in the late eighteenth century, Turville Grange has high running costs and every effort is made to reduce expenses.

One of the costs is fire safety; fire extinguishers are spread across the property and, over and above the initial outlay, the cost of having them serviced annually was a drain on the maintenance budget. Through a chance acquaintance, Safelincs was recommended as a company that might be able to offer a more economical solution.

The Solution

Safelincs introduced the management at Turville Grange to the P50 service-free extinguishers. Manufactured entirely from materials that will not rust or corrode, these appliances do not require an external annual service; a simple yearly check, easily undertaken by one of the employees in the building, is all that is required. After ten years the extinguishers can be refilled and used for a further decade.

The Benefit

"Installing P50 appliances will save us hundreds of pounds in maintenance costs," said Adam Brimley, who manages the building. "In addition, Safelincs gave us invaluable advice on the placement of the extinguishers that enabled us to significantly reduce the number required.

"Safelincs were clearly more interested in giving us good service than selling us more extinguishers than we needed."

Case Study - City Building (Glasgow) LLP

The Customer

City Building (Glasgow) LLP is a highly successful and evolving business which has recently been recognised as one of the top 90 businesses in Scotland for employment and diversity. It has a turnover of around £200 million and is in the top 100 construction companies in the UK. It employs 2,253 people, and supports a total of 3,877 jobs through its supply chain, according to a recent Fraser of Allander Institute Report.

The Challenge

The company was responsible for the construction of a complex of eight care homes. Each had an attic area that required a compact and unobtrusive ladder to enable access for tasks such as service and maintenance.

Saffold Access Ladder

The Solution

City Building (Glasgow) LLP chose the unique Saffold access ladder from Safelincs following a competitive procurement process. With its slim profile and sturdy construction this foldable ladder, which is used alternatively as escape or access ladder, provided the perfect solution. When the Saffold ladder is not in use, the anti-slip rungs are concealed within its own low profile. The closed ladder is only 74mm deep and has an appearance much like that of a drainpipe or cable trunking, enabling it to be inconspicuous.

The Saffold access ladder can be released from either the top or bottom by removing an anti-tamper pin or using an optional key lock. The ladder opens out away from the wall with the rungs rotating into place as the rail extends to form a sturdy, fixed access ladder. There is also an option for a pull-out handle, which allows users to access the Saffold ladder from above, maintaining their safety before and during descent. Although the Saffold ladder was originally designed for outdoor use, it is ideal for indoor application where its anodised aluminium finish looks unobtrusive and elegant.

The Benefit

The Saffold ladder offers the customer an easy-to-fit access solution which is unobtrusive and space-saving while not in use but creates an extremely sturdy and safe ladder when deployed. The ladder can be locked to stop unauthorised access.

Case Study - Vattenfall

The Customer

Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest generators of renewable electricity. 100 per cent owned by the Swedish state it operates wind power turbines in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

The Challenge

Vattenfall is keen to set new standards regarding the Health and Safety in all of its locations for employees and also for contractors and visitors who may attend these sites. In the UK it took the decision to provide automated external defibrillator (AED) units at each of its site buildings.

The Solution

Safelincs has supplied Zoll AED Plus defibrillators (and accessories) to Vattenfall. These life-saving pieces of equipment not only deliver a controlled shock to save a patient from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) but provide CPR feedback and instructions to the first aider. The help feature gives audible and visual prompts for the rate and depth of chest compressions being administered during rescue. This AED is a semi-automatic device which can be used by minimally-trained members of staff.

The Benefit

As well as installing the AEDs in buildings, Vattenfall provides units in lifting bags which technicians can lift up into the turbine nacelles when undertaking essential maintenance work.

By obtaining these AEDs anyone on a Vattenfall site in the UK will have significantly faster access to life-saving equipment should they ever require it.

Case Study - Bournemouth University

The Customer

Bournemouth University was founded in 1992 as one of the ‘new universities’, although its origins date back to the early 1900s. The university currently has more than 17,000 students, including over 1,500 international students from around 130 countries.

Fire extinguishers installed across the campus have to be regularly maintained and serviced – a financial and administrative burden. Was there any way in which the costs could be minimised?

The Solution

Safelincs undertook a free site survey and recommended P50 service-free extinguishers. These 100% non-corrosive appliances do not require maintenance by an extinguisher engineer or a discharge test over their entire 10 year lifespan. Instead, they only require an annual visual inspection by the university’s staff. After 10 years the extinguishers can be factory refurbished for another decade of service-free life. (At the end of their life they are 100% recyclable). Manufactured in the UK, the extinguishers are Kitemarked by BSI to EN3.

The facilities management team were quick to see the advantages of the P50 and a as result several hundred have been installed across the campus.

Included in the price was installation, extinguisher ID signs and brackets, the certification and a short training session to demonstrate to the staff involved how to undertake the simple yearly check.

The Benefit

"Whilst the P50s are more expensive than standard extinguishers, significant savings will be made due to us not having to bring in external engineers," explained Rick White, Maintenance Services Manager.

"The annual check is very straightforward and can be undertaken by our own people. All the administrative hassles of booking external maintenance are a thing of the past."

Case Study - A Public Independent Corporate Body

The Customer

This customer is an independent body corporate established to provide administrative support to public buildings in over 60 locations in Scotland.

The Challenge

Part of its administrative remit is to ensure that all locations remain safe for all those using them. This includes the provision of fire extinguishers.

The cost of providing these and, in particular their annual servicing, runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds. In the current economic climate there is pressure on all public services to cut costs and this organisation is no exception. Was there a way of reducing expenditure whilst maintaining adequate protection across all locations?

The Solution

Whilst on a fire training course, the organisation’s corporate fire safety manager picked up a leaflet about the P50 Fire Extinguisher. This appliance is made from composite materials that will not rust or corrode; the contents are protected in a way that negates the requirement for an annual service to be undertaken by an external engineer. Instead, a simple yearly check can be carried out by an internal member of staff.

The fire safety manager immediately saw the possibility for extensive savings and contacted Safelincs to find out more.

Other advantages of the P50 soon became apparent. For a start the appliances are guaranteed for ten years and do not require refilling after five years. In addition, after ten years they can be refurbished and used for a further ten years.

He was convinced. Now, as extinguishers across the entire corporate estate come up for renewal, they are being replaced by P50s supplied by Safelincs.

The Benefit

Safelincs have undertaken site surveys with the organisation and in many cases were able to make recommendations that reduced the required number of extinguishers whilst maintaining equally effective cover.

Most P50s being installed are foam-filled. Unlike most foam used in extinguishers, it is safe to use on electrical fires (up to 1000V at 1m distance). This means that a single extinguisher can replace a water extinguisher and a CO2 appliance.

As a result the organisation is looking to save hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Case Study - Property Management Company

The Customer

A property management company specialising in providing property guardians for empty properties in the UK. Property guardians are short term tenants who, in exchange for a reduced rent, look after an otherwise empty property. There are thousands of empty properties in the UK, including flats, houses, churches, libraries and offices. They may be empty for many reasons – waiting to be sold, waiting for planning permission or while the owners are overseas. Property guardians put these buildings back into use, helping both the property owner and people looking for short-term, low cost accommodation.

The Challenge

For some time, Safelincs had been providing bespoke fire safety equipment kits which the company issued to its live-in guardians. These consisted of a fire blanket, a fire extinguisher, smoke alarms, a CO alarm, a wind-up torch and a bespoke fire action sign.

The company recently decided to take its fire safety provisions to an even higher level and approached Safelincs to work out a solution.

The Solution

The property management company carries out risk assessments on all properties where it is installing guardians. This assessment identifies the fire safety equipment required for each individual property.

Safelincs then supplies the appropriate fire safety services and equipment including fire extinguishers, appropriate signage, smoke and CO alarms (usually radio-interlinked), door closers, fire door accessories and other fire safety equipment.

By working with Safelincs, the company is able to create a more bespoke fire safety plan for each property. Safelincs offers sensible and practical advice for the safety equipment required for each location. By providing a reliable and efficient service Safelincs has become more of a partner than a supplier.

Case Study - High-class London Apartments

The Customer

An exclusive apartment complex in the heart of London

The Challenge

The complex consists of apartments that are amongst the most expensive in the capital. The impressive atrium and communal areas are equipped with stylish stainless steel fire extinguishers that reflect the sophisticated character of the building.

Due to the exclusive nature of the apartments, and the expectations of the owners, the annual servicing of the appliances needs to be undertaken discretely and 'invisibly'.

The Solution

Safelincs undertakes all servicing from its vehicle parked in the underground car park below the main building. Water containers are carried in the van to refill the water based extinguishers and waste water tanks in the van are utilised for storing the redundant extinguishing foam rather than pouring it into the drains.

In the operational rooms of the complex, which the distinguished owners do not see, service-free P50s have been installed. These more traditional-looking (red) extinguishers are manufactured from materials that will not rust or corrode so that the in-house maintenance staff can check them annually without recourse to external engineers. Unlike other extinguishers they do not need refilling after five years, and after ten can be refurbished and safely utilised for a further ten years.

The Benefit

All the servicing work is carried out without any inconvenience to the residents of the building. In fact they aren’t aware it is going on. Servicing costs for the back office extinguishers have been eliminated.

The Director of Engineering for the building commented: "Your technicians were excellent, a real credit and I would have no hesitation in recommending Safelincs in the future."

Case Study - Norwood

The Customer

With homes and flats across London, Hertfordshire and Berkshire, Norwood is giving adults with learning disabilities the support they need to choose where they live. In each property, housing support is available according to each person’s needs. Adults with learning disabilities can choose between sharing a house with 3-6 people, sharing a flat or living on their own. Norwood’s housing support staff meet the needs of the person or people living in the home or flat.

The Challenge

Norwood has to ensure that all its properties have adequate measures in place for safeguarding in the case of fire. This includes the provision of fire extinguishers.

These extinguishers currently have to be serviced annually – at considerable cost.

The Solution

Norwood became aware of the service-free P50 extinguishers which are constructed using a composite material that will not rust or corrode. They do not need servicing, as a simple annual check, which can be carried out by a member of the customer’s own staff, is all that is required. There is also no refill required after 5 years – P50s only need refilling after 10 years.

Safelincs have so far provided around 100 of the P50 extinguishers (mostly foam) to Norwood and is rolling out a replacement program across most of the properties.

The Benefit

Although P50s are slightly more expensive than conventional extinguishers, Norwood benefits from massive savings by not having to call in service engineers each year. After ten years the units can be refurbished and used for a further ten years.

Unlike most foam extinguishers, P50s contains a type of foam that is safe to use on most electrical fires. Therefore they can be used on multiple fire types; the risk of Norwood staff or residents, although trained, using the wrong type of extinguisher, has been eliminated.

"Safelincs took care of everything," explains John Gregory, Facilities Manager at Norwood. "The price includes a site survey, installation, ID sign, a bracket and certification. The engineer also carried out some quick training to show staff how to look after the extinguishers. And if anybody new joins, Safelincs has provided us with DVDs of the inspection process to keep all of our staff informed."

Case Study - NAMHA

The Customer

The Northumberland Aged Mineworkers Homes Association (NAMHA) provides housing for retired miners, the widows of retired miners and others.

The Challenge

The Northumberland Aged Mineworkers Homes Association

It is known that around 50 people each year die from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and many others suffer from carbon monoxide related illnesses. However, it is believed that this figure is, in reality, far higher, as the symptoms can be easily confused with other ailments. Experts believe that some deaths amongst elderly people are not properly investigated and wrongly attributed to natural causes.

NAMHA wanted to ensure that all its properties were as safe as possible and would not be endangered by this deadly gas, which is created if a fire such as an open fire or a gas boiler flame is not working correctly or if the flu is blocked.

The Solution

As well as ensuring that all gas appliances in its properties are regularly serviced, NAMHA is now investing in carbon monoxide alarms to help detect if carbon monoxide is present in a property. Safelincs has so far provided over 500 CO alarms, which come with a ten year long-life sealed battery and ten year manufacturer’s warranty.

The Benefit

“The staff at Safelincs were extremely supportive and offered useful advice that helped us choose the CO alarms that best suited our requirements,” explained Kevan Davison from NAMHA. “And their products are very competitively priced.”

Case Study - Empire Cinemas

The Customer

Empire Cinemas is the largest independently-owned cinema chain in the UK, currently operating 185 screens in 18 cinemas across the United Kingdom. This includes two new cinema complexes at Hemel Hempstead and Catterick Garrison which both opened in October 2015.

The Challenge

The new cinema complexes form part of two new prestigious projects. The 17 screen Hemel Hempstead cinema is part of a £7 million revamped (and renamed) Jarmen Square development and the 7 Screen Catterick Garrison cinema lies at the heart of a large £25m retail and leisure development – Princes Gate. All theatres, cinemas, concert halls and similar premises must install appropriate firefighting equipment, and Empire Cinemas were determined that their new cinemas should have the most modern appliances fitted.

The Solution

Empire Cinemas

Safelincs supplied and installed P50 foam and P50 wet chemical extinguishers in the new cinema complexes. They were selected for their rugged construction and low maintenance costs. Unlike conventional extinguishers P50s do not require an annual service by an external engineer; a simple check can be undertaken each year by one of the cinema’s staff, which is where the savings are made. The kitemarked P50 extinguishers are guaranteed for ten years after which they can be refilled and used for another ten years.

In the foam version the Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) enables the formation of a film capable of spreading on the surface of burning fuels, which prevents vapour production and seals the surface from oxygen. It will extinguish class A fires (solids such as paper, wood, plastic etc.) and class B fires (flammable liquids such as paraffin, petrol, oil etc.). It has also passed the requirements of EN3 for the suitability of being used on live electrical equipment.

The P50 wet chemical appliance is an F-Class extinguisher especially designed to tackle cooking fat fires. It is also suitable to be used on live electrical equipment.

The Benefit

The new Empire cinemas have the latest appliances installed and routine annual checks can be carried out without any operational disruption, or incurring the cost of bringing in an external engineer.

When the fire extinguishers in the all the other cinemas come up for renewal, it is intended to replace them with P50s.

Case Study - Bowmer & Kirkland Group

The Customer

The Bowmer & Kirkland Group is a family company employing over 1400 staff and consisting of 29 subsidiary companies or divisions operating from Derbyshire, Birmingham, Manchester, Motherwell, Newark, Reading and in the USA. The company offers a wide range of specialisms from construction-related services to homeland security products.

The Challenge

The firm’s construction division, Bowmer & Kirkland Ltd, has more than 100 active sites working across all sectors throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

On-site safety is paramount so every installation has to be equipped with appropriate fire extinguishers. Previously this has meant a mixture of water or AFF, dry powder or CO2 extinguishers.

In addition, the harsh conditions of construction sites were always a challenge with the traditional steel extinguishers used.

The Solution

Bowmer and Kirkland

Bowmer & Kirkland is investing in P50 foam extinguishers for the majority of its sites, which enable it to simplify the types of appliance employed whilst still covering all eventualities. These extinguishers can be utilised on Class A and Class B fires, and are safe for use on live electrical equipment up to 1000 volts at a distance of one metre. This means that on many sites a single appliance can be employed instead of three.

The Benefit

P50s are constructed from a very strong composite material and are not susceptible to dents, rust or corrosion like standard extinguishers. Models with anti-freeze remain operational down to temperatures of -10 °C.

So, as well as reducing the overall number of extinguishers required, Bowmer & Kirkland has appliances that are especially suited to the extreme conditions on some of its sites.

Case Study - Bracknell Forest

The Customer

Bracknell Forest is one of six unitary authority areas within Berkshire in southern England. It covers the three towns of Bracknell, Sandhurst and Crowthorne and also includes the areas of North Ascot, Warfield and Winkfield.

The Challenge

The council operates a Members Initiative Fund which allows Bracknell Forest councillors to spend up to £15,000, within their wards, supporting local groups and projects that make a difference to their local community. Ward councillors Dorothy Hayes MBE and Suzie Phillips canvassed local opinion and found there was a requirement for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) – devices that can stabilise the heart rhythms of a person having a cardiac arrest. AEDs automate the diagnosis of treatable rhythms, meaning that lay responders or bystanders are able to use them successfully with little or no training.

The council then looked for a reliable supplier that could supply AEDs at competitive prices.

The Solution

Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Safelincs has now installed AEDs in public areas such as community centres, schools and small retailers – notably those that have a post office counter. These are delivered together with cabinets where required.

The Benefit

Such has been the success of the project, that Safelincs has now supplied councillors across a number of wards with more than 50 devices.

In the summer of 2014 the residents’ newsletter, which goes to every household in Bracknell Forest, contained details of the location of each AED.

Case Study - Royal Liverpool University Hospital

The Customer

The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest hospital in Merseyside and Cheshire. It has over 40 wards and more than 710 beds. The Emergency Department at the hospital is the largest in the country.

The Challenge

Mike Farrell, a fire safety advisor at the hospital, ensures that the Hospital Trust complies with health and safety as well as fire safety regulations. With hundreds of staff working within this large critical environment it is not surprising that issues arose with regards to fire doors and the movement of patients within the building. The heavy fire doors were making it difficult for staff to push patients from one department to another. Mike Farrell said "Day-to-day, the staff at the hospital are constantly walking through entrances with trolleys and pushing beds so they need easy access. We found that doors were being wedged open as they are very heavy and difficult to get through."

Wedging a fire door open is illegal and poses a great risk to patients and the building should a fire break out. In order to ensure the safety of everyone within the building it was essential that Mr Farrell found a solution that would make opening the fire doors easier for staff and maintained fire safety compliance.

The Solution

Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Mr Farrell commented "To make sure we remain compliant, we sought a solution. We looked for a product that would keep our fire doors open, create a safer environment with the reassurance that the doors will close on the alarm. The way that the doors are situated and the incompatibility of the walls in our High Dependency ward meant that we couldn’t have a magnetic device, so we found Freedor."

The Benefit

"Freedor just goes over the top of the door, it’s out of the way" said Mike. Staff at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital can now walk with ease through the fire doors, even when they are pushing a patient through who is on a bed or stretcher. The Trust now comply with fire safety regulations and have found a cost effective way to allow heavy fire doors to swing freely and close should the fire alarm be triggered.

Mike commented that "Following a trial, our staff were so pleased that we had Freedors installed on the entrance to the ward. It’s a financially viable option being cost effective as the product is wireless. It has made life so much easier for all our staff, they have easier access and it requires minimal effort to open and close the doors when they need to."

Case Study - Alford Corn Exchange Community Group

The Customer

A charity group who took up the running and maintenance of the historical building, Alford Corn Exchange, in Alford Lincolnshire in 2014. Alford is a small market town within a rural farming community.

The Challenge

The hall has expanded what it can offer to hirers, with the purchase of banqueting tables and plush chairs, the organisers have been able to offer packages for weddings, funeral teas and parties. The kitchen is situated at the back of the building and caterers have to walk from the kitchen through the Theatre Bar into the main hall to serve food and drinks at larger functions. On route are two heavy fire doors with strong door closers fitted.

When volunteers carry food and refreshments from one room to the other at functions they find the fire doors difficult to open, sometimes resulting in spillages and the doors close very quickly behind them. The heavy doors also mean that people with impaired mobility struggle to access all areas of the Corn Exchange.

The Solution

Alford Corn Exchange

The Trustees of the Alford Corn Exchange decided that the free-swing Freedor door closer offered them the best solution to their problem. The Freedor is fitted to the top of the door as any door closer but it incorporates the technology of a door retainer inside the casing.

The device is wireless which makes installation simple, easy and cost effective. The unit has the ability to hold the fire door open in any position and allows it to swing freely as any other door. Freedor listens for the fire alarm and on hearing it, automatically closes the fire door and reverts back to functioning as a normal door closer until reset in free-swing action.

The Benefit

Visitors of all ages and all levels of mobility can now move with ease from one room to another. Caterers and volunteers are able to carry trays of food and drinks from one room to another without difficulty. Janet Taylor, Vice Chair said "I would like to say what a difference the new door closers have made to me and other volunteers ,working and serving food at the functions." Janet also said that “It was never easy carrying trays etc. into the main hall, turning round and the door had closed again. I am sure that other caterers who hire our facilities will also appreciate the new Freedor.”

The Freedor allows fire doors to be kept open legally, allowing a flow of fresh air when hot outside. The addition of these units gives the Trustees piece of mind that hirers can keep the rooms cool without breaching fire safety legislation.

Case Study - Portland Youth Christian Outreach (PYCO), Dorset

The Customer

Portland Youth Christian Outreach (PYCO), a small charitable organisation working with young people on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. The centre is open Friday and Saturday evening from 7.30pm to 10.15pm for young people aged between 11 and 19. It offers a drop-in centre and a coffee bar.

The Challenge

The charity carried out a fire risk assessment through which they identified that they did not have sufficient measures in place to prevent the spread of fire through the building or protect the users and staff at the centre. Users at the centre and staff were wedging fire doors open to increase accessibility through the building and also to enable staff to monitor activities in other rooms. Zach Williams, Operations Manager said “Fire doors were often left wedged open as this was the only way that users could freely move around the centre and that staff could easily monitor what was happening in other rooms.”

The Solution

Youth Centre

It was identified that a cost effective solution was needed to allow the ease of movement and ensure that fire safety legislation was not breached. Zach became aware of the Dorgard, which is a wireless fire door retainer that holds the fire door permanently open but closes the door in case of fire. He said “we had seen the Dorgard product and were aware that this would be a good solution to the issues of wedging doors open in the centre as it enables better fire protection.” Fitted with a door closer on the fire door, Dorgard listens for the fire alarm. On hearing it the unit will lift its plunger and the door will close, preventing the spread of fire.

The Benefit

PYCO wanted to find a solution that would not reduce their accessibility but that made them compliant with fire safety regulations. After the easy installation process of fitting Dorgards at the centre in Portland, Zach commented that “Fire doors make a real difference in protecting property, so these devices have made a great improvement to the safety of our building and all users. It allows both staff and volunteers to move around the centre with ease, without placing anyone, or the property at risk.”

Now staff and users of PYCO can move about the building freely, staff are able to monitor all the rooms adequately and fire safety regulations are adhered to.

Case Study - Villa Plus

Villa Plus has been providing memorable holidays since 1986. It operates over 1250 villas, with pools, across 14 destinations.

The facilities manager carried out a site survey, alongside a Safelincs representative. Following this he looked at the various options and was particularly impressed with the service-free P50 extinguisher and elected to invest in this innovative product.

Unlike traditional appliances, P50s do not require an annual service by an external engineer; nor do they need refilling after five years. After ten years they can be refilled and used for a further decade.

The reason for their comparative longevity lies in their construction, which uses materials that are totally corrosion-free. Each year a simple inspection by a member of the school’s own facilities team is all that is required, and, if a new member of staff needs to know what to do, they can view a video on the Safelincs website.

Case Study - Market Harborough Building Society

Market Harborough Building Society (MHBS) is a mutual, owned by its 50,000 members. As a small building society it prides itself on a personal service so often missing from large financial institutions. Since 1870 it has continued to evolve, innovate and, importantly, it puts its members first. It is a trusted provider of mortgages, savings, insurance and financial planning services.

The Challenge

MHBS wanted to provide a service to its mortgage clients that reflected its personal and customer-focused approach. It decided to provide these customers smoke alarms as a way of helping to ensure that their investment was protected. As such a service was not part of its core business, it needed to find a partner that could undertake the fulfilment in a professional manner.

MHBS sends an encoded database to Safelincs where it is held securely in data storage off Safelincs own database. This keeps the mortgage holders information confidential and away from all other records.

Case Study - Church of England Pensions Board

The Customer

The Church of England Pensions Board is a registered charity that has operated the Church's Housing Assistance for the Retired Ministry (CHARM) since it came into operation in 1983. The objective of the scheme is to assist retired clergy and church workers vacating tied housing with retirement accommodation.

There are seven supported housing schemes around the country in the Midlands, West Sussex, Devon, Gloucestershire, Surrey, North Yorkshire and Lancashire. Each has approximately 30 self-contained flats for retired members of the clergy. In addition, all of them have large kitchens where communal meals are prepared, chapels, small offices, dining rooms and most of them also have residents’ lounges.

The Challenge

Under the Regulatory Fire Safety Order 2005 it is a requirement for all employers or owners of premises to carry out a fire risk assessment (FRA) for every workplace or premises for which they are responsible.

The Solution

The Pensions Board engaged Safelincs, the approved supplier of fire safety products on the Parish Buying website, which was able to provide a very reasonable quotation to have each of the sites assessed for fire safety.

One of Safelincs’ professional fire risk assessors visited each of the seven locations, undertook a site analysis, recorded the findings and explained them to the person with responsibility for each site. The assessments looked at measures to reduce the risk of fire on the premises, reducing any potential spread of fire and the effective means of escape should a fire break out. Hazards were identified and eliminated or reduced.

The Benefit

A written FRA report was produced along with the necessary forms to allow each site to update its report in the future and to document any corrective actions that were carried out. The Church of England Pensions Board is now assured that every element of fire safety on each of its sites has been professionally assessed.

Case Study - Harrow College

Harrow College

The Customer

Harrow College is a college in London, with two large campuses in Harrow on the Hill and Harrow Weald.

The Challenge

Following an annual fire extinguisher service visit, carried out by an existing extinguisher service company, a large amount of remedial work was found to be required at both campuses. This included the costly replacement of a large number of extinguishers.

The Solution

Ian Kavanagh, estates manager at Harrow College, looked at how future costs could be reduced by installing P50 maintenance free extinguishers. These appliances only require an annual check by a member of staff. They do not require maintenance by an extinguisher engineer or a discharge test over their entire 10-year lifespan. After 10 years the extinguishers can be refurbished for another 10-year service-free life.

Kavanagh contacted Safelincs who were not only able to supply the P50s but also provided a more in-depth survey of the college’s requirements. A complete audit was carried out identifying which standard extinguishers could remain and which had reached the end of their useful lives and needed to be written off.

The buildings that could continue using the standard extinguishers were highlighted, a maintenance plan developed and recommendations made as to where P50s should be sited.

“I was very impressed with the P50s and potential savings they offered,” commented Kavanagh. “Safelincs provided me with clear, honest information and I was happy to place an order.”

Engineers from Safelincs moved existing useable extinguishers across the sites in accordance with the wishes of the customer and fulfilled requirements to stagger the replacement of the extinguishers. In all, 92 P50s have been supplied, and a full location sheet of extinguishers and marked up floor plans provided by Safelincs. This will ensure that Harrow College’s internal security team, trained to inspect the P50s, can print out a copy and ensure that all extinguishers are checked annually.

The standard extinguishers that are still in service are maintained by Safelincs’ BAFE approved service engineers in accordance to BS5306. They will advise the college when they need to be exchanged for P50s.

The Benefit

The total cost to swap over to the P50 extinguishers was not much greater than the quotations received from the previous servicing company. In the coming years major savings will be made through a vast reduction in maintenance costs.

Case Study - General Hospital

The Customer

A new general hospital in Southern England. The maternity unit now sees nearly 100 babies born every week and the A&E department treats 50,000 patients every year. Inpatients have their own room with en-suite facilities.

The Challenge

When the hospital was being built it required fire extinguishers to be installed while the building works were ongoing. Some installations were on reinforced concrete requiring special tools and generators, as the power supply of the hospital was not working yet. Specialist extinguishers as non-magnetic units for the scanner areas were required.

The Solution

Over a period of six months Safelincs supplied 632 extinguishers, 72 fire blankets and numerous extinguisher cabinets. These were installed in stages as the hospital wings were nearing completions at different times.

Two engineers would attend the site to either wall hang the extinguishers or to place them in cabinets depending on their location. The cabinets in the parking area were fixed to steel-reinforced concrete which was challenging and involved using a generator and specialist tools.

Safelincs also sourced anti-magnetic extinguishers which are specially designed for use in areas of high magnetic activity, such as the hospital’s MRI scanning rooms.

Also provided were panoramic safety signs to highlight the location of first aid kits, emergency eye wash, stretchers, hand washing facilities, safe areas and defibrillators etc. These signs are made from a high quality photo luminescent plastic which makes them glow in the dark for night-time visibility.

The relationship has continued beyond the supply and installation as Safelincs carries out the annual servicing of the extinguishers in conjunction with the facilities management company that looks after the hospital.

The firm moved into newly renovated premises – a Victorian building close to the centre of Lincoln - and needed all fire safety facilities in the building to be overhauled in time for the opening.

A fire risk assessor from Safelincs visited and undertook a full fire risk assessment. An extinguisher site survey was carried out and the fire alarm system was tested.

Safelincs then supplied and installed new service-free P50 extinguishers, fire door retainers and fire safety signage.

Choosing P50 extinguishers will save Stanbridge the annual cost of servicing since they have been designed so that a simple visual inspection once a year is all that is required. This inspection can be easily carried out by one of the Stanbridge employees and the engineer demonstrated the simple process at the time of installation. P50 extinguishers also do not require a refill after five years, reducing costs dramatically.

Case Study - Guesthouse, Trusthorpe, Lincolnshire

The Customer

The guesthouse in question is a four star guest house, with six en-suite rooms, on the East Coast of Lincolnshire.

The Challenge

The owners of the Ramblers received a request from a County Council Fire Protection Officer to upgrade their existing alarm system to standard BS5839 pt 1 2002. This would have meant that they would have had to install a central fire control panel and interlinked fire and heat detectors. The installation of this system would have made it necessary to lay cables throughout the two storey building with its six guest rooms during the main holiday season! The thought of all the upheaval and possible loss of revenue coupled with the cost of the system - not insignificant for a small business - led the owners to seek help from Safelincs.

The Solution

Safelincs initially looked at the option of using a wireless system to BS5839 part 1 but the cost for this was still similar to a wired system with central alarm panel.

The MD of Safelincs then rang the fire safety officer in question who, after initial hesitation and after some internal discussions, agreed that the guest house, having only two floors and a relatively small number of bedrooms could be downgraded to a domestic fire alarm system falling in category BS5839 part 6 grade D.

It was agreed that the Ei radio-interlinked system with guaranteed 10 year lithium batteries was equivalent to a Grade D system. This system contains radio-interlinked manual break points as well as smoke and heat detectors. The installation was carried out by Safelincs in the space of two hours.

This case shows that fire risk assessments allow room for discussion and, as long as the safety of the people within a building is not compromised, the fire services and the councils’ fire protection officers are happy to discuss the best and most appropriate solution.

The Benefit

Taking up the solution negotiated and installed by Safelincs saved the owners nearly £3,000, a lot of disruption and potential loss of earnings whilst the work was being carried out.

In addition, the maintenance of the system can be carried out by the guest house owners by simply pressing one of the test buttons (a different one each time the system is tested) and each smoke detector has an integrated sounder, which improves general alarm sound levels significantly.

Case Study - Rhodes @ The Dome Restaurant, Plymouth

The Customer

Rhodes @ The Dome restaurant and bar is perched on Plymouth Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound. It is celebrity chef Gary Rhodes’ only restaurant outside London.

The restaurant opened at the beginning of 2013 and its fire extinguishers were supplied by Safelincs.

The Challenge

Shortly after it opened there was a fire in the kitchen that closed the restaurant for the evening.

The fire was brought under control using the fire extinguishers which meant that they had to be replaced quickly before the restaurant could reopen.

The Solution

Because the fire extinguishers used to extinguish the fire were purchased from Safelincs they were replaced free of charge. Customers who purchase fire safety equipment from Safelincs will have them replaced for free if they were located near, or used on, a fire.

In all, five extinguishers were used and each has been replaced, free of charge, by an engineer from Safelincs.

The restaurant manager praised the support provided by Safelincs. “As soon as we contacted them they were on the case and arranged for an engineer to install replacement extinguishers.”

The Benefit

The restaurant was immediately supplied with new extinguishers to allow it to operate again quickly. It also benefited from the very latest in fire safety technology as Safelincs upgraded the fire extinguishers from Foam and CO2 extinguishers to water mist extinguishers. Water mist extinguishers are receiving considerable interest from the hotel and catering industry at the moment.

Safelincs’ water mist fire extinguishers will put out just about any type of fire, including deep fat fryer fires, without leaving harmful residues. Its supersonic nozzle disperses microscopic ‘dry’ water mist particles to suppress fires and extinguish burning materials quickly and easily. Smoke particles are absorbed by the mist and the user is protected from the heat of the fire by the cloud of mist.

Case Study - Local Authority - Children’s Services

The Customer

Children’s Services at a large local authority and one of its foster families.

The Challenge

The foster family has a young child in its care with severe behavioural and emotional problems that is prone to self-harm. Everything had been made completely safe in his bedroom but concerns were still arising at night as he had access to the remainder of the house.

The obvious solution was to lock the child in its bedroom, but this presented an additional concern regarding fire safety. If a fire were to break out the child would be trapped in the bedroom.

The Solution

Safelincs worked with Children’s Services and the local fire service to come up with a way in which this problem could be resolved.

The solution was to fit a magnetic lock (mag lock) on the child’s bedroom door. The strong electromagnet keeps the door closed but if a smoke alarm in the house is triggered the electricity supply to the magnetic lock automatically cuts out and the magnet loses power, releasing the door which can then be opened.

The Benefit

The foster parents are now able to sleep safe in the knowledge that their child cannot come to harm outside his room. At the same time if there was a fire the child would not be trapped.

Case Study – Large Pig Breeding Company

The Customer

One of the UK’s leading pig breeding companies with over 20 farms.

The Challenge

Fire extinguisher service engineers in rural areas will cover many farms on their servicing runs and even when the engineers take special precautions to avoid carrying over infections from one farm to the next, the act of removing extinguishers from a site for refilling at the engineer’s base or van and entering the farm for inspection carry the risk of spreading disease. Pigs, in particular, are very susceptible to infections and pig farmers and especially pig breeders therefore place great importance on infection prevention.

The Solution

The pig breeder introduced Safelincs’ P50 Fireworld service free extinguishers throughout its 20 plus farms.

These extinguishers have been especially designed so that a simple visual inspection by the customer once a year, rather than an annual service by an external engineer, is all that is required. The P50 do not need to be re-filled after 5 years either. They are available in foam and powder versions and are kitemarked to BS EN3, the British standard for fire extinguishers.

In each case the Safelincs engineer, after a quarantine period during which he was not allowed to visit other farms, supplied the extinguishers to the farm to be equipped. After ‘showering-in’, a hygiene provision in the pig farming industry, the site survey and the installation took place and farm employees were trained in the visual inspection of the extinguishers. These visits by the Safelincs engineer were the last extinguisher service engineer visits for a period of ten years, reducing the risk of infection greatly.

The Benefit

A significant cost reduction has been achieved by cutting out ten years of servicing and the refill after five years. In addition the contamination risk is minimised as no external engineer needs to enter a farm for ten years.

The P50 extinguishers are also particularly suited for a tough and muddy environment, as the components will not corrode or deteriorate, even when installed in the open.

Case Study – E.ON

The Customer

E.ON is one of the UK's leading power companies - generating electricity, and retailing power and gas.

The Challenge

E.ON had initially 525 fire extinguishers installed by Safelincs at one of its oil-fired power stations in Kent. The site was later decommissioned and a new gas turbine station with a total generation capacity of 1,380MW came into service. This increased the total extinguisher requirement on the site to over 750 extinguishers. As the extinguishers from the first plant had not reached the end of their serviceable life, a solution was needed to stop the waste of perfectly good extinguishers, especially since the Safelincs extinguishers had been supplied with a 10 year warranty!

The Solution

Safelincs and e.on identified surplus extinguishers and, after careful assessment and servicing, these extinguishers were re-deployed on the new site. Where required, new extinguishers were installed.

The Benefit

A large proportion of the existing extinguisher stock could be re-deployed successfully, saving e.on substantial amounts.

Safelincs worked closely with the team at E.ON to set up new fire points and install the necessary signage as well as offering professional advice on their location

E.ON also benefitted from Safelincs transparent service without hidden charges.

All work was carried out in accordance to BS5306 and certified by BAFE approved engineers.

Case Study - Leading Online and Home Shopping Retailer

The Customer

This leading online and home shopping retailer has an annual turnover of over £1.5 billion and over five million customers. It has a number of UK based contact centres and warehouses that handle over 19 million calls and over 53 million items per year. Its website attracts more than 270 million visits each year.

The Challenge

Every business seeks to eliminate unnecessary costs. The expense of having its fire extinguishers serviced by outside engineers was something this catalogue company wanted to minimise. The company also had hundreds of extinguishers that had come to the end of their life and needed replacing.

The Solution

Safelincs came up with a solution that completely eliminated the annual visit from an external engineer for all extinguishers that needed replacing – the P50. This appliance, available in powder and foam versions, is unique in that the main casing in made from plastic, reinforced with aramid fibre, the material from which bulletproof vests are made, and the metal elements are brass.

Because of this it will not rust or corrode which means that the contents are well protected removing the requirement for the yearly visit from an external engineer. A simple check that can be carried out by a member of staff is all that is required.

The extinguishers do not need refilling after five years, unlike most appliances, and are guaranteed for ten years. After this time they can be refilled and used for another ten years. At the end of their life the units are 100% recyclable.

Safelincs offered the customer a phased introduction of the P50 extinguishers. Entire buildings were converted to the new extinguisher provision and any traditional extinguishers still usable were consolidated in one of the remaining buildings to save the customer costs. Those traditional extinguishers are still maintained by Safelincs.

The Benefit

The company was spending a lot every year on having its extinguishers serviced. With the P50s, one of its own staff can carry out an annual visual check quickly and easily, eradicating external costs. The engineer who installed the P50s also demonstrated to staff how to carry out the straightforward visual inspection. Safelincs also has a short video on its website that runs through the process.

With the appliances that do not yet need replacing the customer is benefiting from servicing from Safelincs that is competitively priced, transparent and without hidden extras. All work is carried out in accordance to BS5306 and certified by BAFE approved engineers.

Case Study – Oil Refinery

The Customer

A large oil refinery in Eastern England.

The Challenge

The refinery has around 2,000 fire extinguishers that used to require annual servicing. The extinguishers were serviced and maintained by an in-house team of extinguisher service engineers. The management was looking at ways to cut this significant cost. The refinery also uses extinguishers for training and fighting small fires, so that extinguishers have to be refilled.

The Solution

Over a two year period Safelincs is replacing the extinguishers with P50 service free extinguishers, as the previously used extinguishers are coming up for replacement or service.

P50s are constructed using a composite material that will not rust or corrode. This protects the contents and no refills are required for ten years.

The expensive annual service is no longer necessary and is replaced by a straightforward yearly check which can quickly and easily be undertaken by the refinery’s own staff. Refinery staff was trained in this visual check when the units were first installed and as a backup there is a short video on the Safelincs website that runs through the simple steps.

After ten years the extinguishers can be refilled and used for a further ten years. At the end of that time they are 100% recyclable. The refinery has taken mostly powder versions of the P50, but some are foam.

Safelincs also exchanges used P50 and replaces them with re-filled units at the refinery, so that the refinery is always fully protected. The customer does not require a workshop any longer nor do they require their own extinguisher servicing staff.

The Benefit

These changes provide the refinery with very significant cost savings. The corrosion-free nature of the P50s is of an enormous benefit in the environment the refinery operates in. For the remaining extinguishers Safelincs operates a very competitive and clear pricing policy. There are no hidden charges which greatly helps the refinery management’s cost planning.

Case Study - Kirklees Council

The Customer

Kirklees is a metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. It has a population of over 400,000 and has Huddersfield, the largest settlement in the district, as its centre of administration.

The Challenge

The Kirklees borough has an estimated 45,000 householders in fuel poverty, meaning they are unable to adequately heat their homes. The council introduced the warmzone initiative to help every household improve its energy efficiency with a range of support services. Kirklees Council offered all householders, free of charge, a number of improvements including cavity wall and loft installation and low energy light bulbs.

At the same time, to improve the residents’ safety, every customer in the region could request a free carbon monoxide alarm.

To fulfil this project the council was looking for an organisation that could provide over 120,000 off EN50291 compliant alarms, bearing the Kirklees Council logo, to all households. Evidence of a proven track record of customer service was needed together with the ability to deal with a large number of telephone queries. The successful supplier also needed a quality assurance system consistent with the requirements of BS ENISO9001.

The Solution

Safelincs won the business because it was able to demonstrate a consistent commitment to customer care and service. Having met the requirements on price and quality it exceeded the stipulated warranty period by two years. Safelincs sources its products only from quality suppliers, including Kidde and El-Electronics. Its highly trained customer care personnel proved to the Council that they were able to answer all queries directly without having to seek assistance.

As well as meeting the product criteria, Safelincs was able to show it could provide the same high level of service whether supplying bulk orders to large organisations or large numbers of single items to individuals.

The Benefit

By the time the project was complete Safelincs had supplied 120,000 carbon monoxide alarms.

One resident detected carbon monoxide as soon as she turned her new carbon monoxide detector on. Her husband had not been well, feeling sleepy and tired all the time. She too had been suffering from headaches. After the appliances were checked in the home it was discovered that there was a major carbon monoxide leak. This couple were lucky to detect the presence of the carbon monoxide before it was too late.

When fire broke out in The Snoozebox Marquee, a trained member of staff was able to quickly and safely put it out using a water mist fire extinguisher.

The fire started when the guest put a croissant inside a toaster. “It was really too big for the toaster and soon caught fire,” explained Tom Dodson, Project Manager, Snoozebox.

“Fortunately we had equipped the marquee with a water mist fire extinguisher that safely smothered the flames without causing any damage to the room, which may have been the case if we had installed a foam or powder extinguisher. And amazingly, after we had it inspected and PAT tested, the toaster was put back into service!”

Case Study - Holy Trinity and St Mary’s Parish, Guildford

The Customer

This parish consists of two churches. Built in 1763 the Holy Trinity Church is a Grade 1 listed building. It is the largest Georgian church in Surrey. St Mary’s is the oldest church in Guildford dating back to around 950.

The Challenge

Parish administrator Michèle Lyon had become frustrated with the fire extinguisher service she was receiving for the Holy Trinity and St Marys churches in Guildford. Having cancelled one contract when it became too expensive four years ago, she decided to use a local company. They came in at a lower cost initially but then prices started to rise and she found that she was being charged for unexpected ‘extras’. One example was an invoice charge for CO2 extinguisher horns, despite this being an integral part of any CO2 fire extinguisher.

The Solution

Michèle put the contract out to tender and invited Safelincs to quote as it is an approved supplier on the Parish Buying* website.

A Safelincs service engineer attended the two churches and found that the incumbent supplier wanted to replace equipment that didn’t need replacing and had been completely missing servicing of other extinguishers in the past. Furthermore, the company had issued fire extinguisher certificates for items that had not been inspected.

Case Study – Metroline

The Customer

Metroline has a fleet of 1,682 buses and operates across 99 routes, mostly in London. It employs 5,000 people and in 2012 carried over 250 million passengers.

The Challenge

Metroline needed to replace and service the fire extinguishers in hundreds of its buses within a tight time frame. The challenge arose as most of these buses were out on the road for the majority of the time. The company also needed to establish a process to guarantee that in the future appliances on its entire fleet were serviced in a timely and logical manner.

To ensure that all buses had the installation and servicing carried out on time, Safelincs engineers worked through the night for several weeks.

Now Safelincs has taken on the annual servicing of all extinguishers on the company’s buses. As extinguishers come to the end of their useful life, Safelincs provides replacements.

“Each time a bus has its MOT, one of our engineers will ensure that that the on-board extinguisher is serviced and, if necessary, replaced,” explained Stuart Baxter, Business Development Manager at Safelincs.

All of Safelincs’ work is carried out in accordance with BS5306 and certified by BAFE approved engineers.

Case Study – Local Council

The Customer

This local government district in West Sussex covers an area of 129 square miles with an estimated population of 139,000.

The Challenge

In the current economic climate all councils are under are under pressure to cut costs. The council has the responsibility for the annual servicing of fire extinguishers in its buildings. Having engineers visit each year was an on-going cost that the council wished to minimise.

The Solution

The council installed 54 P50 service-free fire extinguishers, supplied by Safelincs, in its buildings. Unlike conventional extinguishers the P50 does not require an annual service by an external engineer. They have been designed so that a simple check can be undertaken each year by one of the council’s staff, which is where the savings are made. The kitemarked P50 extinguishers are guaranteed for ten years after which they can be refilled and used for another ten years.

The inner cylinder of the extinguisher is made from composite plastic which is cocooned by spun Aramid, the material bullet proof vests are made from. The polyethelene shell protects the Aramid core which has been rigorously tested to ensure that it provides durability in even the most hostile environments. All the materials used in the construction of the extinguishers are corrosion-free and 100% recyclable. The council has taken mainly foam P50 extinguishers but also has three powder versions for specialist areas.

The Benefit

The council will make savings of around £20,000 over the next ten years.

“Installation and certification by one of the Safelincs engineers was included in the price,” explained John Rodway, Safety Advisor for the council. “At the same time he demonstrated the straightforward annual checking process and if there is a change of staff, a short video on the Safelincs website runs through the procedure.”
