What types of fire alarm covers are available?

Fire alarm covers are available in various configurations to protect different components of your fire safety system. Anti-vandal cages offer comprehensive protection for smoke detectors and heat detectors, featuring durable steel construction with powder-coated finishes that resist corrosion and wear. These cages allow proper airflow and sensor functionality, maintaining detection capabilities without compromising protection.

Call point covers provide targeted protection for manual break glass units. These robust covers prevent accidental activation and deliberate damage, while still allowing for emergency access. The design ensures authorised personnel can still operate the call point quickly during an emergency.

Sounder covers protect audible alarm devices from physical damage and exposure to weather. These covers maintain acoustic performance so the alarm remains audible throughout the protected area.

Why do you need fire alarm covers?

Fire alarm covers serve multiple protective functions, extending equipment life and maintaining system reliability. Vandalism poses a significant threat to fire safety equipment, particularly in public areas, schools, and high-traffic locations. Covers act as a deterrent and physical barrier against intentional damage.

Environmental protection is equally important. Covers shield sensitive electronic components from dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations that can cause malfunction or premature failure. This protection is essential in industrial environments, outdoor installations, and areas with challenging conditions.

Preventing accidental damage reduces maintenance costs and system downtime. Covers protect against impacts from moving equipment, cleaning activities, and general wear from daily operations.

How do fire alarm covers maintain system performance?

Modern fire alarm covers are engineered to protect without compromising detection or alert capabilities. Detector covers feature carefully designed ventilation that allows smoke and heat to reach sensors whilst blocking physical access to delicate components.

The materials used in quality covers won't interfere with detection technology. Mesh patterns and ventilation holes are precisely sized to maintain airflow and sensor sensitivity. This ensures your fire detection system continues to meet regulatory requirements and performance standards.

Installation is straightforward, with most covers designed for quick and easy fitting without the need for special tools. The covers integrate seamlessly with existing fire safety systems and don't require modifications to your current setup.

What should you consider when choosing fire alarm covers?

Location assessment determines the type of protection needed. High-risk areas with heavy foot traffic or potential for vandalism require more robust coverage than standard office environments. Consider the specific threats your installation faces.

Environmental factors influence material selection. Outdoor applications require weather-resistant finishes, industrial settings may necessitate chemical-resistant coatings, and high-temperature areas necessitate heat-resistant materials.

Compatibility with your existing fire safety equipment is essential. Covers must fit properly and not interfere with device operation. Verify the mounting requirements and ensure the cover design enables proper sensor function.

How do you install fire alarm covers?

Professional installation ensures optimal protection and system performance. Qualified fire safety technicians can assess your specific needs and recommend suitable coverage solutions tailored to your environment.

The installation process typically involves securing covers to existing mounting points without disturbing the operation of detectors or call points. Most covers use tamper-resistant fixings that prevent unauthorised removal, so protection remains effective.

Testing after installation confirms that covered devices continue to function correctly. This verification ensures your fire safety system maintains its detection capabilities and alarm functions.

Protecting your fire safety investment with high-quality covers ensures reliable operation and extends the life of your equipment. Browse our comprehensive range of fire alarm covers, designed to meet the demanding requirements of modern fire safety systems. Consider also our range of call point covers for additional protection. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do British Standards require fire alarm covers?

Yes, BS 5839-1:2017 advises the use of protective covers on accessories located in vulnerable areas or where accidental or malicious activations are common. The updated standard now recommends manual call point covers in environments prone to false activations, marking a shift from the previous requirement for a one-touch system.

Do anti-vandal covers affect fire alarm functionality?

No, quality anti-vandal covers are designed to prevent direct contact and tampering without compromising detection capabilities. The covers allow proper airflow for smoke detectors and maintain sensor sensitivity, ensuring your fire safety equipment continues to function correctly and meet regulatory requirements.

Where are fire alarm covers most needed?

Schools are one environment where call point covers would be advisable, as the likelihood of accidental or malicious activation is higher. Other high-risk locations include public buildings, healthcare facilities, retail environments, and any areas with heavy foot traffic or potential vandalism.

How much can you save with anti-vandal protection?

Anti-vandal cages and covers help preserve functionality, maintain safety and save significant costs in the long run. By preventing damage to expensive fire safety equipment, protective covers eliminate costly repairs, replacements, and system downtime that can result from vandalism or accidental damage.

What types of fire safety equipment need protection?

After investing in a smoke alarm, sounder, detectors or other equipment, you want to protect it from vandalism and interference. Anti-vandal covers are available for smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points, sounders, and other fire safety accessories that may be vulnerable to tampering or damage.

Should call points be fitted with covers?

Should call points be fitted with covers?

Updates have been made to BS5839-1:2017 which now advises manual call points to be fitted with fire alarm call point protective covers. Manual call points were once regulated to be a one touch system, however protective covers are now recommended in which they would be moved to gain access to the frangible elements. All manual call point located in vulnerable areas and are prone to false activations should be protected, to prevent this. Schools are one environment where call point covers would be advised, as the likeness of accidental or malicious activation would be higher, therefore the call point covers would be in place to prevent this.
