FAQs

FAQs (10)

Who provides service for my Evac+Chair?
Safelincs can carry out your service, which will ensure that you are maintaining your Evac+Chair in accordance with the Class 1 Medical Device guidelines. Your chair should be serviced and maintained annually to ensure that it operates safely. A monthly in-house check should also be carried out.

How can I stop the Evac+Chair if I’ve already started going down stairs?

When operating the Evac+Chair, you can stop the chair as you are descending by pushing down on the handles and stopping your own downward progress. To ensure confidence whilst using an evacuation chair, training is vital and Safelincs offers a dedicated training course for evacuation chairs.

Is there a minimum age or weight for the Evac+Chairs?

No, the Evac+Chairs are suitable for children (not babies or small toddlers that can be carried) as they come with patient restraints to keep the user secure in the chair while in motion, especially, when descending stairs. It is a recommendation from the manufacturer that when you purchase an Evac+Chair for a specific child user that adding a comfy seat would be beneficial as the hammock style seat can be quite uncomfortable for younger users.

How strong do I need to be to operate the Evac+Chair?

Because the chair operates via friction belts, strength is less of a concern than being properly trained. Adding a person's weight will result in a downwards movement without lifting. When using the chair to transport someone downstairs, it is important to note that you should be pushing down towards your toes, not pulling back or pushing forwards as with a shopping trolley.

Can evacuation chairs go upstairs?

A few of the evacuation chairs have the capability of ascending stairs. These are the EVAC+Chair 600H and the EVAC+Chair 700H IBEX Transeat, both of which require two individuals in order to do so. The EVAC+Chair 1000H is capable of ascending stairs by a motorised belt and only requires a single operator.

Are Evac+Chairs required?
Yes, there is a legal obligation to ensure that all employees and the general public are able to safely evacuate your building in the event of a fire. Evac+Chair is one way to meet this obligation.

Can I use the Evac+Chair to transport a patient on level ground as well as on the stairs?

The Evac+Chair can be used to transport individual across the same level as well as descending stairs. In the event of an emergency / evacuation the chair should be taken by a trained individual to the location of the intended user. This individual can either self-transfer, if capable or be assisted by others as required.

The Evac+Chair can be purchased with additional transfer aids, such as the Patient Seat Carrier or the ProMove Sling to assist with transference for those who are not mobile or are wheelchair users.

How much does the Evac+Chair weigh?
EVAC+Chair Model Weight (kg)
300H 9.5
600H 11
110 10
500H 13
700H (IBEX Transeat) 14.5
1000H 26
200H 6
Where should I store my Evac+Chair?
The Evac+Chair needs to be in plain sight of all building occupants. The Evac+Chair is supplied with 2 wall mounting hooks to enable the chair to be located in the most appropriate area. Additionally, the bright yellow branded cover that is supplied with the Evac+Chair should ensure that once in position, the chair remains in focus.

How many operators are necessary for Evac+Chair evacuation chairs?

How many operators you require depends on which evacuation chair you have or require. Here is a list below of EVAC+Chair and how many operators they require.

Legislation Requirements

Legislation Requirements

Equal opportunity and health and safety requirements are guided by a number of current legislations. The 600H chair provides a solution to the evacuation needs of those who are less able, in both commercial and residential applications. Legislation requirements to be met by building operators and employers include:

  • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 - Means of escape
  • Building Regulations Parts B and M - Building use and access
  • BS5588-8:1999 - Providing disabled people with measures to be assisted in an emergency
  • Equality Act 2009 - Ensuring that disabled people are not at a disadvantage compared to those that are not disabled
  • DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) - Providing adequate access and facilities for any disabled person who may enter a building

Evac+Chairs are Class I Medical Devices with their installation and use regulated under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER). Employers, self-employed people, and those employed to supervise or manage equipment are responsible for ensuring that a reasonable amount of staff are adequately trained to use Evac+Chairs safely, that the chairs are annually serviced by a qualified engineer, and that they are regularly inspected by a competent worker.
