Bleed Kits

A bleed kit is a specialised emergency pack designed to help control severe or catastrophic bleeding before professional medical help arrives. Unlike a standard first aid kit, which is intended for minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, or burns, a bleed kit contains advanced items specifically chosen to deal with life‑threatening blood loss. These typically include trauma dressings, haemostatic gauze (which helps blood clot more quickly), a tourniquet to stop bleeding from limbs, nitrile gloves for hygiene, and trauma shears to cut clothing away. The purpose of a bleed kit is to give bystanders the tools they need to act quickly in the critical minutes following an accident, assault, or medical emergency, when uncontrolled bleeding can otherwise prove fatal.

Uncontrolled bleeding is one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma situations. In fact, a person can bleed to death in as little as five minutes if no intervention is made. Ambulance response times, while fast, may not always be quick enough to save a life in these circumstances. Having a bleed kit available means that immediate action can be taken by anyone nearby, dramatically increasing survival chances. They are particularly important in public spaces, workplaces, and schools, where large numbers of people gather and accidents or violent incidents may occur. By bridging the gap between the incident and the arrival of emergency services, bleed kits empower ordinary people to save lives.

Yes. Campaigns across the UK strongly advocate for bleed kits in schools, shopping centres, sports venues, and other public spaces. The rationale is simple: accidents, assaults, or medical emergencies can result in catastrophic bleeding, and having a bleed kit on site ensures immediate intervention before paramedics arrive.

With the introduction of Martyn's Law , this recommendation has become even more pressing. The legislation requires public venues to adopt proportionate security and emergency preparedness measures. While its primary focus is on preventing and responding to terrorist threats, it also emphasises the importance of being ready to manage medical trauma during mass casualty events. Bleed kits, alongside defibrillators and trauma response equipment, are now considered essential resources for compliance.

Under Home Office guidance, many public premises are advised to have at least two Public Access Trauma (PAcT) kits available on site. These kits are designed for rapid deployment and can be used by staff or members of the public to treat severe bleeding injuries. By installing bleed kits, schools and venues not only improve their emergency response capability but also demonstrate compliance with Martyn’s Law, helping to protect lives and reduce casualties in the event of a serious incident.
