1 Hour Fire Door

1 Hour Fire Door

An FD60 rated fire door, installed and maintained correctly, will hold back smoke and flames for a minimum of one hour. Fire doors are an essential part of compartmentation within a building, which slows the spread of smoke and flames by containing the fire within sections. For example, if a fire breaks out in one room of the building, a closed fire door makes this one compartment, and contains the fire here until that door gives way; for an FD30 door, this would be at least 30 minutes, while an FD60 fire door will last at least an hour. Once the fire has spread from its initial compartment, it is then contained again in the next until that door gives way. This provides more time for building users to escape to safety. For more information on the importance of fire doors, read our blog.

FD60 vs FD30 fire doors

An FD30 rated fire door will withstand smoke and flames for at least 30 minutes, while an FD60 fire door will do this for at least an hour. In order to achieve a fire rating, fire doors must be tested in controlled conditions, and shown to be effective for a particular length of time (i.e., 30 or 60 minutes). FD ratings of up to 240 are available for high-risk environments, providing four hours of protection. For more information about the differences between FD30 and FD60 fire doors, read our blog.

What are the requirements for FD60 doors?

FD60 doors must resist fire for a minimum of 60 minutes. Requirements include:

  • Greater thickness than FD30 (typically 54mm minimum)
  • More robust core materials
  • Higher specification intumescent strips
  • Fire-rated ironmongery throughout
  • Stricter gap tolerances
  • More substantial framing requirements
  • Special grade fire-rated glazing (if present)
  • Certified installation
  • Clear certification marking

Our FD60 doors meet all these requirements and come with proper certification.

What is an FD60 fire door?

An FD60 fire door is tested and certified to resist smoke and flames for at least 60 minutes. It's typically thicker than an FD30 door and provides longer protection, making it suitable for buildings that need extended evacuation time.

Are FD60 fire doors suitable for homes?

FD60 fire doors are suitable for certain residential properties. Building regulations may require 60 minute fire resistance in specific locations, so check what your property needs or contact our team for guidance.

What is the difference between FD30 and FD60 fire doors?

The difference is how long each door resists fire. An FD30 door holds back flames for 30 minutes minimum. An FD60 fire door provides at least 60 minutes of protection and is typically thicker to achieve this rating.

Are glazed FD60 fire doors available?

Glazed FD60 fire doors are available with more than 20 design options. We've tested all our glazing configurations within our door sets to make sure they meet the 60 minute fire rating.

What is included in an FD60 fire door set?

An FD60 fire door set is the door leaf and a matching frame sold together. This helps ensure a proper fit and maintains the fire rating when you install it with the correct seals and ironmongery.
