Ceilings are important fire barriers, but once a hole has been cut in them to allow the fitting of a downlight, their ability to stop the spread of fire is greatly reduced. Fitting an intumescent downlight cover (also called hood) restores the integrity of the ceiling. Upon contact with fire, the intumescent material in the downlight cover will expand and fill the available space with a highly fire-resistant foam. The cover will also stop fire should the downlight overheat and will prevent the contact of any flammable materials with the hot surfaces of the downlight.
