CO2 fire extinguishers contain pure carbon dioxide which is a clean extinguishant, leaving no residue. These extinguishers are suitable for use on live electrical equipment and can also be used on class B (flammable liquid) fires such as petrol, oil, solvents. CO2 extinguishers are ideal for use in server rooms and rooms containing large amounts of electrical equipment.
Identifiable by a black label and the large discharge horn, a CO2 fire extinguisher is often paired with a foam or water extinguisher to cover multiple fire risks.
Our carbon dioxide extinguishers are Kitemarked to BS EN3 and are CE marked. They are supplied fully charged and come complete with a wall bracket. We recommend they are installed and commissioned by a BAFE certified engineer.

CO2 fire extinguishers were originally developed to deal with liquid fires such as burning petrol. The inert CO2 gas excludes oxygen from the surface of the liquid fire and stops the fire. These days CO2 fire extinguishers are mainly used to tackle fires involving live electrical equipment. Carbon dioxide extinguishers do not leave any residue when discharged and so usually do not cause any damage to equipment such as computers or servers. The cold temperature and electrostatic shock from the CO2 gas can however damage very sensitive electronic equipment in some cases. A CO2 extinguisher is often paired with a foam or water extinguisher to form a fire point in offices and other commercial premises. This pairing covers all common fire types found in these environments, with the CO2 extinguisher covering any electrical and class B risks and the foam or water extinguisher covering class A risks.
CO2 fire extinguishers should be used with care as they can be a risk to human health if they are not used correctly. CO2 gas is poisonous and should not be used in confined spaces. This type of extinguisher should always be discharged with the frost-free horn attached due to the risk of freeze burns to the user.
CO2 fire extinguishers can be recognised by the black identification field with the words CO2 or 'Carbon Dioxide' printed on this black field. CO2 extinguishers also have no pressure gauge and a discharge horn rather than a hose. A CO2 extinguisher should also be accompanied by an ID sign fixed nearby that details its suitability for each type of fire risk.
CO2 fire extinguishers contain only CO2 gas (carbon dioxide) in a highly compressed format (55 bar pressure). CO2 is inert, will evaporate without trace and suffocates fire by starving the fire of oxygen. As the CO2 expands through the jet (horn), it becomes very cold, so cold in fact that the gas can cause frost damage to skin. Therefore, when choosing your CO2 extinguisher, make sure that you select an extinguisher with frost-free horn.
Because of the high pressure in CO2 extinguishers, they must not be stored near radiators or in direct sunlight. If they get hot, the pressure will quickly rise and a safety valve will open to release the high pressure. As a result your CO2 extinguisher will then contain less CO2 as you would expect.
Also, never use the CO2 extinguisher without the horn being fitted; the horn acts as a pressure reducer and if removed, the CO2 fire extinguisher will discharge rapidly which can seriously injure the user.
