How do you use a fire blanket correctly?
Using a fire blanket is straightforward, but the technique matters. Pull the tabs to release the blanket from its case. Hold it by the corners and approach the fire from the side, never from above. Cover the flames completely, cutting off their oxygen supply. Leave the blanket in place for at least 15 minutes to let everything cool down.
What types of fires can fire blankets tackle?
Fire blankets are highly effective in extinguishing cooking fires, clothing fires and waste-bin fires. They're particularly effective when fat catches fire in a pan - something water would make dangerously worse. The blanket smothers the flames by removing oxygen, the fire's lifeline.
You can also wrap a fire blanket around someone whose clothes have caught fire. It is more effective than trying to beat out flames with your hands.
Which fire blanket suits your needs?
A kitchen fire blanket is compact and designed for cooking emergencies. They fit neatly in a wall-mounted case near your cooker. Workshop fire blankets are larger and more robust, making them ideal for industrial settings where larger fires may break out.
We stock fire blankets from trusted manufacturers, all of which have been tested to British Standards. Each blanket comes with clear instructions and mounting hardware. Whether you're protecting your family's kitchen or your team's workshop, we'll help you choose the right blanket for your space.
How long do fire blankets last?
Fire blankets need replacing after 7 years. Store them in their protective case, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Check the case occasionally for damage, but ensure the blanket inside remains ready for use.
Why choose fire blankets over other fire safety equipment?
Fire blankets complement your existing fire safety setup perfectly. Fire blankets are easy to deploy, leave no messy residue, are relatively cheap to purchase and offer an alternative to fire extinguishers when tackling small fires.
What should you look for when buying fire blankets?
Size matters. A fire blanket for the kitchen is typically 1m x 1m - perfect for pan fires. Workshop blankets are 1.8m x 1.8m or larger for bigger emergencies. Check the material too. Quality blankets use fibreglass or treated wool that won't melt under heat.
Look for blankets that meet BS EN 1869 standards. This ensures they've been tested for heat resistance and durability. The mounting case should be sturdy and marked so anyone can find it quickly.
