Types of Smoke Alarms Available

Battery Smoke Alarms

Battery-operated smoke detectors provide flexible installation options without wiring requirements. Modern units feature:

  • Replaceable AA batteries or lithium batteries
  • Easy installation in minutes
  • No electrician costs

Mains Smoke Alarms

Mains powered smoke alarms connect directly to your home's electrical system, offering:

  • Continuous protection
  • Battery backup during power cuts
  • Lower long-term maintenance needs
  • Greater reliability for permanent installations

Interlinked Smoke Alarms

Interlinked smoke alarms communicate with each other, creating a network throughout your home.

  • When one alarm detects smoke, all alarms sound
  • Radio frequency (RF) and wire interlink options available
  • Increased warning time, especially in multi-storey buildings
  • Options for both battery and mains-powered units

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

Also known as optical smoke alarms, these units use light detection technology.

  • Most effective at detecting slow, smouldering fires
  • Less prone to false alarms from cooking fumes
  • Ideal for living areas and escape routes
  • The NFCC and FRS recommend having at least one on every floor of your home
  • Optical smoke alarms are not suited to garages, bathrooms or kitchens

Heat Detectors

Heat detectors respond to temperature rather than smoke particles.

  • Perfect for kitchens and garages where normal smoke alarms might cause false alarms
  • Activate when temperature rises rapidly or reaches a fixed point
  • Complement smoke alarms for total home coverage
  • Available in both battery and mains versions

Combined Detection Systems

For enhanced protection, consider combined detection units:

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in one device
  • Smoke and heat detection capabilities
  • Reduces installation requirements and wall clutter
  • Clear voice or visual indicators for threat type

Advanced Features to Consider

When selecting smoke alarms, several features can improve functionality:

  • Test buttons for regular alarm checking
  • Hush buttons to silence false alarms temporarily
  • Sleep mode for reduced nighttime LED flashing
  • Voice alerts that specify threat type and location
  • Remote testing capabilities for hard-to-reach installations
  • Mobile device alerts for when you are away from home

Alarms for Specific Needs

Safelincs provides solutions for all users:

  • Visual alert systems with strobe lights for deaf people
  • Voice alerts for the visually impaired
  • Vibrating pad alerts that can be placed under pillows
  • Locate functions to identify which alarm has triggered
  • Fire alarm kits with multiple detectors for whole-home installation

British Standards Compliance

All smoke alarms sold by Safelincs meet British safety standards:

  • BS EN 14604 for general smoke alarm requirements
  • Grade D1/D2 for mains powered alarms with battery backup
  • Grade F1/F2 for battery-powered units
  • 2022 Welsh and Scottish legislation-compliant options

Ionisation Smoke Alarms

Optical alarm products replace aging ionisation alarms, which are being phased out industry-wide due to their radioactive sensors, which make them dangerous to manufacture, costly to transport and environmentally hazardous to dispose of. Optical smoke alarm technology has advanced sufficiently to be interchangeable with ionisation alarms while avoiding radioactive elements. Safelincs has stopped selling ionisation alarms and encourages all customers to purchase our optical alternatives instead.

Smoke Detector Maintenance

To maintain proper function:

  • Test alarms weekly using the test button (Safelincs provides a free safety reminder service that sends email or text alerts at your chosen intervals, with no fees, no junk mail, and the option to cancel anytime)
  • Replace batteries annually (unless using 10-year sealed units) or when the low battery warning sounds
  • Replace entire units according to manufacturer guidelines, typically 10 years
  • Keep smoke detector parts clean from dust and debris
