Having a CO detector with you whilst you are travelling is essential; your home may be covered but you leave that protection behind when you go away camping, on a boating holiday or on a caravan trip. This range of portable carbon monoxide alarms have been designed, tested and certified as safe to use on boats and / or in tents and in caravans and they are an essential product to take with you on your travels.
Our travel CO alarms have been put through rigorous testing and are kitemarked to the British Standard. CO alarms certified to BS EN50291-2 are classified as either ‘suitable for camping/caravans/boats’ or just ‘suitable for camping/caravans/motorhomes’. Please ensure that you are selecting the correct model for your requirements.

Travel carbon monoxide detectors are designed to detect the poisonous gas carbon monoxide, but have also undergone further rigorous testing, under BS EN50291-2. The additional testing, which includes the device being subject to movement or vibration is still capable of detecting carbon monoxide. By doing so this ensures that the alarm is suitable for travel, including camping, caravanning, boats, and in some cases motorhomes. Caravans, tents, and boats often have a higher risk of carbon monoxide being present due to nearby sources of CO like vehicle exhausts, engines, generators, or barbecues. The concentration of carbon monoxide will build up more quickly in these small, confined spaces.
Although legally it is not a requirement, they are strongly recommending that all travellers, including backpackers should carry a carbon monoxide alarm with them. CO alarm legislation varies massively from country to country, with some countries such as South America and Australia (popular backpacking destinations) having no requirement for carbon monoxide detectors at all. Even with various safety regulations in place e.g. gas safety checks, sweeping chimneys, and clearing flues, carbon monoxide is still the cause of over 50 deaths each year in the UK. In travel destinations with fewer regulations, the risks could be even higher, the only way to detect CO is with an audible carbon monoxide detector. Some portable CO alarms are available with a securing strap to fix the alarm to a clip inside a bag, or a travel pouch to provide additional protection when travelling.
The Pack Safe Appeal is a campaign set up in recognition of Hudson Foley, a 24-year-old backpacker, who tragically passed away as a result of a carbon monoxide poisoning due to a carbon monoxide leak in the accommodation he was residing in, whilst in Quito, Ecuador. The aim of the appeal is to create awareness of the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning whilst travelling and to encourage all backpackers to take a portable carbon monoxide detector with them in their luggage.
The majority of backpackers are unaware of the hidden health and safety risks in the places that they stay such as hostels and homestay accommodation whilst backpacking. In many popular backpacking countries, such as South America and Australia, they do not have any legislation surrounding the requirement for carbon monoxide alarms, meaning that such devices are not always installed.
The Pack Safe Appeal highlights this invisible danger, which can affect anyone of any age, by strongly recommending that a travel carbon monoxide detector is included in all traveller's kit lists.
