Dorgard fire door holders keep fire doors safely and legally open using battery powered wireless technology. Installed at the bottom of your fire door, the inconspicuous white Dorgard door holder is suitable for installation in a variety of premises including offices, schools, churches, colleges, health practices etc. Enabling you to conform to the Equality Act 2010, the Dorgard door holder, also called fire door retainer, is designed to both improve access for users through fire doors and to provide a legal and safe solution to holding open fire doors.
The Dorgard has the CE mark, complies to EN 1155 and BS 7273-4 Category C and is accepted by UK fire services. The Dorgard is manufactured in the UK to the highest standard allowing us to offer a 5 year warranty, available exclusively to Safelincs.
Using acoustic monitoring technology, Dorgards automatically release the rubber keep-foot upon recognising the sound of a fire alarm. This closes the fire door and maintains the fire integrity within your premises. With a simple 10 minute installation, the Dorgard fire door holder is a quick and reliable solution to retaining fire doors. Testing that the Dorgard is working effectively should be part of your premise's fire safety regime and can be conveniently carried out at the same time as testing your fire alarm system.

Q. Will the Dorgard release automatically at night?
Yes, if set to do so. There are three timed setting options for night time release which the installer can select prior to installation. Batteries to activate the internal clock in the Dorgard must be inserted at 12.00hrs (midday) and the night time settings can then be selected and set accordingly. The Dorgard will then release each night at the pre-determined time.
Q. Where Dorgards have been fitted should employees be made aware of them?
Employees should be informed about Dorgard and instructed on its use and operation and include it in the workplace fire routine.
Q. Does a fire alarm audibility test need to be carried out before fitting Dorgard?
As Dorgard is an audio sensing device that can be adjusted within certain limits, it is not necessary to carry out a test before the installation. If the Dorgard cannot detect the alarm to respond to it the likelihood is that the alarm is not sounding at the minimum level required by BS 5839 which should alert the user to a problem with the alarm system that will require remedial action.
Q. Can the Dorgard test itself?
A self-test routine is run every seven days by the Dorgard. The plunger is released, closing the door and the unit will emit a warning alarm if a fault is detected.
Q. Will the closing of a fire door by a Dorgard affect other units by restricting the sound of the fire alarm through the closed door?
No, the operation of the Dorgard, or the ability to hear the fire alarm, should not be affected provided the sound level stated in BS5839 is adhered to throughout the building. Dorgards can be adjusted if the sound level does drop slightly within performance limits.
Q. Which standard does the Dorgard comply with?
Dorgard complies with the new standard for low voltage hold open devices, BS EN 1155.
Q. Why does the Dorgard not close the door as soon as the fire alarm sounds?
Dorgard listens for the sound of the alarm system every 4 seconds. The sound has to continue for 10 seconds to activate the closing action of Dorgard. This ensures that the closing of the door will not be delayed any longer than 14 seconds. This compares with hard wired units that have a delay built in to the system.
Q. Will the Dorgard work in noisy environments?
Yes, in an environment where the ambient level of noise is above 80db the unit will close automatically to all noise. Alternatively the Dorgard SmartSound, which is specially designed for noisy environments, or the Dorgard Pro, which takes its release signal from the central fire alarm panel, can be used.
Q. Does the Dorgard only operate at one decibel level?
No, the Dorgard reacts to sound levels between 65db and 85db. All sounds in excess of 65db will activate the Dorgard to close the door. This complies with BS5839 which gives 65 dB as the minimum sound level for fire alarms.
Q. I am a disabled person and struggle to open the heavy firedoors in my home. Do you have a product that can legally keep them open, that will close, automatically closing them when a fire is detected?
The Dorgard will hold the fire door open and release in the case of an alarm sounding. To make a fire door open and close easily without the resistance of a fire door closer we offer a further product, the Freedor. It is placed instead of the overhead fire door closer and in normal operation offers no resistance to the user. Like the Dorgard it closes the door should there be a fire alarm.
Q. Is the Dorgard suitable in sleeping risk premises?
Yes. The Dorgard can hold a fire door open to maintain the functionality of the building by allowing an uninterrupted flow of people through the building during the day and releasing the fire door to close in the evening. You can adjust the Dorgard to automatically close at night.
Q. If the fire alarm system fails how can Dorgard fail-safe?
Within the risk assessment for the building there should be an instruction that in the event of a failure in the fire alarm system all door hold-open devices should be deactivated, though this should be a rare event as the majority of systems have to have emergency backup power supplies which means they should continue to work in the event of of power failure.
Q. Where should I fit Dorgard?
Dorgard can be fitted where there is a need to hold open a fire door to enable the movement and circulation of people around a building. Dorgard can be fitted to self-closing fire doors. The building must have a fire alarm and a risk assessment carried out by the employer to check the suitability of using a Dorgard as some high risk areas e.g. kitchens, boiler rooms and doors protecting a single staircase building may not be appropriate.
Q. The Dorgard is sold with a 5 year guarantee, but there is no reference to this in the literature with the product.
Safelincs is the only Dorgard retailer who offers a 5 year warranty on the Dorgard. This warranty is not described in the generic manual etc of the product, which refers only to the standard manufacturer warranty of two years. Safelincs covers the additional warranty of the Dorgard. Our statement on the website is proof of our warranty. You can print out our Dorgard pages if you want to have proof of the 5 year warranty in the future. However proof of purchase from us is enough.
Q. Can Dorgard be used on a double door application where the doors need to close in a sequence?
Dorgard can be used on double door applications. The Dorgard does not control the speed of the door closing, it is the door closer that does this. To ensure that the doors close in the correct sequence the speed of the door closer on each door would need adjusting. Ensure that the leaf that needs to close first is set to close at a faster speed than the other.
Q. What are the fail safe features of the Dorgard?
The Dorgard has several safety features built in. The unit will detect when the battery voltage is dropping. It will then emit a warning sound and release the plunger. The device will not allow the plunger to hold the door open until the batteries have been replaced. Dorgard will also not allow the plunger to be used should the batteries be removed from the unit.
Q. How do you know that Dorgard has detected smoke or a fire?
The Dorgard does not detect smoke or the fire. It works by being able to react to the fire alarm that goes off on detection of a fire. The unit will lift the plunger on the sound of the alarm, a warning tone is emitted when the door is closing.
Q. Can schools and other public sector bodies set up an account?
Yes, all public sector bodies are welcome to set up an account with us. On receipt of an official purchase order a 30 day account will automatically be set up for you. Purchase orders can be sent via e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org. Once the purchase order has been received the goods will be dispatched to you and an invoice sent payable within 30 days.

Great product and quick delivery. Thanks.
I wanted to trial one of these before committing to purchasing 18 more. It works exactly as described, very easy to fit and I have now gone ahead and fitted them throughout the building.
Would recommend both safelincs and these units. Thanks.
