For new builds or house extensions, mains-powered and interlinked smoke
detectors (Grade D units) are compulsory according to BS 5839-6. For existing
properties which do not fall under building regs, you can install battery operated
alarm systems that
do not require cabling. This saves time, incurs less cost and does not affect
the aesthetics of your interior. Battery operated units are easy to set up and
use radio frequency (wireless technology) to communicate and interlink.
Essentially whole house systems are designed to ensure that if one alarm unit
detects a potential fire or hazard then the whole system is alerted and all sounders
within it alarm. This creates a full 'warning system' to the occupants of the
building and gives
more time for evacuation/investigation.
