Product Overview

Summary of this standard

The BS EN 50172:2004,BS 5266-8:2004 standards specify the provision of lighting of escape routes and safety signs should the normal supply fail. This is based on the size, type and usage of the premises. It applies to emergency escape lighting in all work places and premises open to the public.

This partially supersedes BS 5266-1:1999, which has been revised to remove conflicting requirements including duration period and frequency for self contained lights. A number of the requirements are expanded, particularly the size of open area that requires emergency lighting. Appropriate product standards are also identified.

Compliance with this standard will assist users in meeting the requirements of the Workplace Directive, the Construction Products Directive and the forthcoming Regulatory Reform Order (RRO).
