What started with just <strong>40 people in Australia<\/strong> has now grown into the <strong>world\u2019s largest plastic\u2011avoidance movement<\/strong>, with <strong>174 million people across 190 countries taking part in 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The world produces <strong>over 400 million tonnes of plastic every year<\/strong>, and only <strong>around 9% is recycled<\/strong> globally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated <strong>11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year<\/strong>, harming marine life and ecosystems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the UK alone, households throw away <strong>around 90 billion pieces of plastic packaging every year<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge isn\u2019t about being perfect\u2014it\u2019s about making <em>small, consistent changes<\/em> that add up over time. In fact, Plastic Free July reports that <strong>87% of participants make at least one long\u2011lasting behaviour change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201cPlastic Free July has the power to create a widespread cultural shift\u2014turning off the tap of plastic waste one choice at a time.\u201d<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8211; Rebecca Prince\u2011Ruiz, founder of Plastic-Free July<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>So, how can I make a difference? Here are some practical and achievable ways to ditch those single-use plastics this July!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>What Can You Do?<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Switch to a Refillable Water Bottle <\/strong><strong>\ud83d\udeb0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, <strong>around 500 billion plastic bottles are used each year<\/strong>, and <strong>91% are not recycled<\/strong>. Many end up in landfill, incinerators, or the environment. Using a refillable bottle can eliminate hundreds of disposable bottles per person each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 Choose a reusable bottle you love and commit to <strong>zero bottled water<\/strong> this July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Pack a Plastic\u2011Free Lunch <\/strong><strong>\ud83c\udf5c<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snack packaging and food wrappers are among the most common single\u2011use plastic items in UK household waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple swaps including using reusable lunch boxes or containers, reusable cutlery and napkins.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> Cooking and packing food at home reduces plastic waste <em>and<\/em> cuts food costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 Pick one regular meal this week and make it completely plastic\u2011free, by using an alternative to food wrapping such as beeswax wraps<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Embrace the Soap Bar and ditch Disposable Toiletries <\/strong><strong>\ud83e\uddfc<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bathrooms are a hotspot for single\u2011use plastic: toothbrushes, razors, cotton pads, and travel minis all add up quickly. Including liquid soaps, shampoos, and shower gels are typically packaged in plastic, and many are not recycled. Solid soap and shampoo bars often come in recyclable cardboard and last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Make simple swaps to bamboo toothbrushes, refillable deodorants, reusable cotton pads etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cThe most environmentally friendly product is the one you didn\u2019t buy.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Joshua Becker<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 When your next toiletry runs out, replace it with a <strong>plastic\u2011free alternative<\/strong>\u2014no need to throw anything away early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Use Reusable Bags and Straws <\/strong><strong>\ud83d\udecd<\/strong><strong>\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, people still use <strong>around 5 trillion plastic bags every year<\/strong>. While bags and straws may seem small, they\u2019re some of the most common items found during beach clean\u2011ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The good news:<\/strong> the UK carrier bag charge reduced supermarket bag use by <strong>97%<\/strong>\u2014proof that behaviour change works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 Keep reusable options easily available, such as by the door or in your bag so saying \u201cno\u201d becomes automatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Cut Back on Convenience Foods <\/strong><strong>\ud83c\udf54<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Convenience foods often come with <strong>multiple layers of plastic packaging<\/strong>, contributing to the UK\u2019s massive household plastic waste problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing fresh, loose produce or cooking simple meals helps reduce plastic <em>at the source<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can you do?<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 Try one <strong>plastic\u2011light grocery shop<\/strong> this week\u2014buy loose where you can and skip unnecessary packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Reduce Microplastics (The Plastic You Can\u2019t See) <\/strong><strong>\ud83d\udc56<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Microplastics are now found <strong>in human blood, lungs, and even brains<\/strong>.
