Free fire extinguishers for customer

free-replacementsSafelincs supplies Handelsbanken,  a leading Swedish Bank with over 700 branches in 24 countries, 147 branches of which are in the UK, with fire safety products such as fire extinguishers.  Purchasing fire extinguishers from Safelincs gives Handelsbanken full protection. Should the extinguishers ever be used, Safelincs will immediately replace the extinguishers. So, when on the 21st of October a CO2 fire extinguisher was used by the fire brigade in one of the Handelsbanken branches, Safelincs immediately replaced the extinguisher, free of charge.

We want our customers to use their fire fighting equipment without ever having to worry about the aftermath. This applies not only to extinguishers – all fire safety equipment bought from us used on or affected by fire is covered by our free replacement guarantee.

One stop fire safety shop

When Stanbridge Associates, a Lincoln-based firm of accountants, specialising in the medical profession, moved to newly renovated premises in the city they needed to be sure that the premises were fulfilling all fire safety regulations.

The building, a Victorian office conversion, was visited by a fire risk assessor from Safelincs who carried out the full fire risk assessment. Safelincs also surveyed the fire extinguisher arrangements, carried out a fire alarm system test and made recommendations for improvements to suit the way the building would be used.

To allow for better wheelchair access, ventilation and all-round convenience without jeopardising safety or breaking the law, fire door retainers were fitted. These allow fire doors to be kept open safely, while automatically closing them in the event of a fire.

The existing fire extinguishers were replaced with P50 service free extinguishers which will save Stanbridge Associates the annual cost of servicing since they have been designed so that a simple visual inspection once a year is all that is required. This can be easily carried out by one of Stanbridge’s employees and the Safelincs engineer trained staff in this simple process at the time of installation. P50 extinguishers also do not require a refill after five years and can be refurbished after ten years to last a further ten years.

Safelincs put in place the necessary fire safety signs and, as a final touch, handed over a free emergency lighting test key, which means that Stanbridge will be able to test the emergency lighting system themselves in future without needing to call out an external engineer.

“Safelincs provided us with a ‘one stop shop’ to enable us to meet all our fire safety requirements when we moved into our new offices,” said Catherine Cullen, Account Manager, Stanbridge Associates. “Their professional, friendly approach not only completed the work on time but also saved us money.”

Extinguisher run over by van – still pressurised!

We were always convinced that our P50 service free extinguishers made from a Kevlar-type aramid were almost in-destructable. Nevertheless, when one of our engineers was visiting one of our customers, a refinery on the east coast, he was surprised when he was handed a fire extinguisher that had been run over by a van and that it was still fully pressurised!

crushed-p50-1crushed-p50-2crushed-p50-3

This is not that surprising when you know that 1 in 500 of these extinguishers are tested by pressurising them 12,000 times from zero bar to 25 bar. And after they have undergone this harsh test, they are crushed flat by a steel blade before being re-inflated without being allowed to leak at 55 bar!

The P50 service free extinguisher is suitable for the harshest of environments, including outdoors.

Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service chooses P50 service free extinguishers

The P50 service free extinguishers from Britannia are introduced into more and more public organisations and fire safety services. The latest formal introduction of these extinguishers, which do not require external servicing visits, was by the Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service who gave a written endorsement on the 6th of September 2013:

‘Following our supply of the P50 Powder fire extinguishers I can confirm that all Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service front line fire appliances now carry this extinguisher.

Feedback from crews using them at incidents have found them to be very effective leaving less residual media, they are lighter and easy for stowage than our previous steel bodied extinguishers.

Simple weekly visual inspections are carried out by operational crews and any refills are carried out by our fully qualified BAFE registered staff.

Massive savings in service costs over the 10 year period are hoped to be achieved.’

The weekly visual inspections are, of course, the standard regular visual checks that all extinguisher owners should carry out.

The P50s do not require annual servicing and do not have to be re-filled after 5 years.

Gas BBQ catches fire and goes out of control

bbq-fireMr PC, in London, bought a 4kg UltraFire powder extinguisher from Safelincs back in 2011. He contacted us again a few days ago to tell us how he had used the extinguisher to successfully put out a dangerous BBQ fire. As Safelincs offers free ‘after the fire replacement’ he, of course, asked for his free replacement extinguisher which we have sent him. This service, exclusive to Safelincs, ensures that our customers never hesitate to use their fire fighting equipment and that they are protected again as quickly as possible.

Mr PC had started his almost new gas BBQ (it had only been used once before) at around 5pm and was entertaining his guests when later that night at around 11:30pm the flames of the fire went from ‘controlled’ to ‘uncontrolled’, as the fat at the base of the BBQ caught fire. The lid of the BBQ was immediately shut to starve the fire of oxygen, however, the opposite happened. Drawing air from the holes in the bottom of the BBQ the fire really heated up with flames licking out from underneath the lid.

The gas was turned off but the fat fire still continued. Mr PC evacuated his guests, then fetched his 4kg powder extinguisher from his house and extinguished the fire.

The heat of the fire had been so extensive that the mesh of the BBQ was deformed by the heat!

So, while gas fired BBQs have the advantage of exact control of the heat while everything works as expected, it is still wise to position a gas BBQ away from the house, ensure that fat cannot build up and to have some form of fire fighting means ready.

Rhodes restaurant benefits from Safelincs policy

A fire at the recently opened Rhodes @ The Dome restaurant in Plymouth closed the restaurant for the evening. But, to paraphrase an old saying, the smoke cloud had a silver lining.

The fire extinguishers staff used to extinguish the fire were purchased from Safelincs so they were replaced free of charge. Customers who purchase fire safety equipment from Safelincs will have them replaced for free if they were located near, or used on a fire.

In fact, the restaurant benefited from the very latest in fire safety technology as Safelincs replaced them with water mist extinguishers of the type that are receiving considerable interest from the hotel and catering industry at the moment.

The £1.5million restaurant is the latest project from celebrity chef Gary Rhodes and opened in January this year. The fire started just after 6.30 on a Friday evening in a commercial cooking range.

Restaurant Manager David Pover praised the support provided by Safelincs. “As soon as we contacted them they were on the case and arranged for an engineer to install the new fire extinguishers. And we are very pleased to have been given the very latest appliances.”

Safelincs’ Water Mist Fire Extinguisher will put out just about any type of fire without leaving harmful residues. Its supersonic nozzle disperses microscopic water mist particles to suppress fires and extinguish burning materials quickly and easily. Smoke is minimised and the user is protected from the heat by the cloud of mist.

There are no nasty chemicals to clear up and the extinguisher will not ruin any food that is in the vicinity. Water mist is also safe to use on electrical fires.

In all, five extinguishers were used and each has been replaced, free of charge, by an engineer from Safelincs.

Guests present on the night of the fire complimented the staff who calmly ushered them outside while they waited for the fire to be dealt with. After the situation was under control they were able to return to the bar where they were offered a glass of Prosecco but the patrons had to wait for another night to sample the food.

Safelincs Boards the Bus!

Fire safety company Safelincs has won a contract with Metroline to maintain fire extinguishers throughout its London bus operation.

metroline-bussuesMetroline, which operates 80 routes in the capital with a fleet of 1,200 buses, purchases specialist fire extinguishers from Safelincs for their vehicles. Safelincs also undertakes the annual servicing of all extinguishers on the company’s buses. As extinguishers on the remainder of the fleet come to the end of their useful life, Safelincs provides replacements.

“Each time a bus has its MOT, one of our engineers will ensure that that the on-board extinguisher is serviced and, if necessary, replaced,” explained Stuart Baxter, Business Development Manager at Safelincs.

Metroline carries 250 million passengers on its buses every year and covers 37.5 million miles with its journeys. “We have a duty of care to ensure that our passengers remain safe,” said Nik Phiniefs, Head Buyer for Metroline . “We selected Safelincs because they were very professional and totally transparent in their dealings. There are no hidden charges so we can accurately forecast our expenditure.”

All of Safelincs’ work is carried out in accordance to BS5306 and certified by BAFE approved engineers.

P50 Popular at FM Show at NEC

The P50 service free extinguisher turned more than a few heads on the Safelincs stand at the recent Facilities Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Facilities managers who attend the annual event are always looking for innovative ways to cut costs and provide better service for their clients. They didn’t take much persuading to see the benefits and potential savings offered by the P50.

P50-at-the-FM-trade-show

Traditional extinguishers require servicing each year but P50s are constructed using a composite material that will not rust or corrode. This protects the contents and no discharge testing or refills are required for ten years. The expensive annual service by an external engineer is no longer necessary– just a straightforward yearly test that can easily be carried out by an organisation’s in-house staff.

After ten years the P50s can be refilled and used for a further ten years.

Safelincs’ managing director, Harry Dewick-Eisele was at the show and had the opportunity to speak to many facilities managers. “Those with responsibility for large estates could see savings running into thousands of pounds,” he said. “A good number were going back to their offices to weigh up how quickly they could replace their existing appliances and start cutting costs.”

District council saves £20,000 in extinguisher deal

Safelincs has installed 54 service free extinguishers for a Sussex district council in a deal that will save it an estimated £20,000 over the next ten years.

Unlike conventional extinguishers the P50 extinguishers do not require an annual service by an external engineer. They have been designed so that a simple check can be undertaken each year by one of the council’s staff, which is where the savings are made.

The kitemarked P50 extinguishers are guaranteed for ten years after which they can be refilled and used for another ten years (most extinguishers need refilling after five years). The inner cylinder of the extinguisher is made from composite plastic which is cocooned by spun Aramid, the material bullet proof vests are made from. The metal elements are either brass or stainless steel which means that they are very strong and will not rust or corrode. All the materials used in the construction of the extinguishers are 100% recyclable.

“Installation and certification by one of the Safelincs engineers was included in the price,” explained John Rodway, safety advisor for the council.   “At the same time he demonstrated the straightforward annual checking process and if there is a change of staff, a short video on the Safelincs website runs through the procedure.”

The council has taken mainly foam extinguishers but also has three powder appliances for specialist areas. With no servicing costs for the next ten years it will save in the region of £2,000 annually.
