The latest fire statistics for 2011-2012 have been released by the government. During this period fire brigades were called out a total of 585,000 times, including false alarm calls.
Although it appears that there was a drop in the number of call outs to actual fires in comparison to the previous year there were still a total of 380 fatalities from fires in dwellings compared to 404 last year. The reduction in fatalities is a good step forward, however there is still along way to go to reduce this further.
These figures are a stark reminder that if a working fire alarm had been fitted in these premises the number of fatalities could have been reduced further. It was noted that there is an increased risk of fatality for the over 80 age group.
