What is a fire extinguisher service?

What is a fire extinguisher service?

A fire extinguisher service consists of inspection of extinguisher parts including gauges, pins, hose, and tags. The extinguisher is weighed to ensure no leakage has occurred and that the extinguisher is within manufacturer weight tolerance for the media it contains. The external state of the extinguisher is also checked for damage and the service-sticker is updated. Fire extinguisher servicing is a legal requirement and should be conducted annually on every fire extinguisher by a trained technician. This ensures that all extinguishers are in good working order in case they need to be used in an emergency situation.

Safelincs extinguisher technicians are BAFE certified and will carry out extinguisher servicing in accordance with the relevant British Standard.

Responsible persons should also conduct monthly ‘walk-by’ checks on all fire safety equipment in case of any obvious damage or missing items.

How often should a fire extinguisher be serviced?

A basic fire extinguisher service should take place annually on every steel extinguisher unit to make sure it doesn’t fail in an emergency situation. An extended fire extinguisher service is mandatory after 5 years on most steel extinguishers. At the extended service, a discharge test is performed, and checks are carried out for internal and external corrosion and damage.

Service free fire extinguishers

Service free fire extinguishers

P50 eco-friendly fire extinguishers don’t require an annual service or a discharge and refill, making it a cost-effective option in comparison to a traditional steel fire extinguisher. P50s require a higher cost upfront but offer significant cost savings over the total lifespan of the product (10 years) due to not needing an annual or extended service. A simple visual inspection is required instead each year and this can be carried out by a member of your team.
