The battery units comply to Grade F, whilst the mains units comply to D, E and F of BS 5839-6:2004.
As kitchens are usually joined to hallways, smoke detectors located in hallways should be resistant to false alarms caused by cooking fumes. Optical smoke alarms are effective at avoiding this type of false alarm whilst protecting you against a wide range of fire types.
With optical smoke alarms reacting better to smouldering fires (those with large amounts of smoke) siting them in hallways and landings helps to detect fires in rooms leading off.
