On Monday 16th August the finishing touches were put to our brand new website. After months of in-house design and development work and having to hurdle many obstacles along the way, the site was launched and gave Safelincs a brand new face to its customers with a host of new functionalities.

With the customer in mind, the new site has a fresh, spacious layout without compromising user-friendliness and important information. The site is packed with new features and interactive fire safety guides which aim to help customers make the right purchase.

We are all very proud of the new design; however this is merely the beginning of our exciting new drive at Safelincs. The new site is designed to allow us to add more features in the future, and further capabilities are being worked on at this very moment!

Tell us what you think – We are always looking for feedback about any elements of the site and would really appreciate your views, good or bad.

West Yorkshire fire crews are having the water that is set aside for them to tackle major blazes stolen. The water hydrants are being tapped into by businesses, around 20 million litres a month.

Senior operations manager for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Ian Bitcon, stated that this behaviour was putting lives at risk.

The hydrants are being tapped into by businesses in such a way that the hydrant can become damaged, resulting in them not being able to be accessed by the fire brigade. The water supply to residents can be discoloured and even interrupted through these illegal actions.

A drain jetting company is amongst the types of businesses that are tapping into the hydrants. The company was using the hydrants to refill their tanks. The method they used to extract the water posed a great risk to water contamination as they did not use a double check valve or a non-return flow valve. They did not hold a licence and were taken to court as a result of their actions. The company were fined £1,000 plus legal costs.

Some hydrants are accessible to road sweepers and window cleaners, these hydrants are marked WO. The hydrants allocated for the use of the fire brigade are marked FH.

How can we help our customers in the worst case scenario – a fire? We have sold you all the fire safety products you need but how can we help you further should you become the victim of fire? Our answer to this question is the introduction of our ‘free replacement after fire’ policy.

Safelincs is the first fire safety company to offer this service. This policy is designed to encourage our customers to use all their fire fighting and rescue equipment without any consideration of costs to limit the impact of a fire. We see it also as a way of helping our customers through a difficult time and supporting them through the entire life cycle of the fire safety products sold by us.

We hope that our customers never need to use the products to fight or escape a fire, but where they are unfortunate enough to do so we hope that our pledge will help them to return to normal as quickly as possible.

We’ve just finished sending out several boxes of CO Alarms to our Twitter followers, Facebook Fans and visitors to our web site. Last weekend we asked you all to send us your favourite fire safety stories so we could share them on our web site. It was our goal to bring together a valuable and compelling collection of stories to learn from, which will help to motivate readers to improve their fire safety protection. The response was excellent, and it didn’t take us long to receive over 200 entries.

Some of the stories were funny, some were sad and some were plain shocking. But all the stories managed to emphasise the importance of taking fire safety seriously. Today we will start sharing them with everyone else on our web site. We’re sure you’ll enjoy them as much as we have!

We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who submitted their story. As promised, we have selected our favourite three entries and awarded them with an extra prize, as well as their CO Alarm:

1st place – Emma Morris
Winner of £100 worth of Love2shop vouchers

2nd place – Pat McMullan
Winner of £50 worth of Love2shop vouchers

3rd place – Sara Cumiskey
Winner of £25 worth of Love2shop vouchers

Keep an eye out for all the stories as they are released each week day on our Fire Safety Stories web page. We’d also love to hear your thoughts, feedback and own messages about the stories through Twitter and Facebook.

Last year’s FireKills campaign has received a Yellow Pencil award by D&AD. The campaign was used to depict the effect of smoke and compared this to drowning.

FireKills is a governmental fire safety promotion campaign in which Safelincs Ltd is stakeholder. The short film created for last year’s campaign is very hard hitting and shows a couple asleep in a bed underwater. The voiceover of the film makes the comparison to toxic smoke by stating that you only need two or three breaths to be rendered unconscious.

Safelincs would like to congratulate all at FireKills on this prestigious award. View the short film

In September 2009 the Department for Communities and Local Government published a report that looked at deaths caused by carbon monoxide poisoning and the provision of CO detectors under the buildings regulations.

The report looked at the number of deaths per year caused as a result of carbon monoxide and how cost effective it would be to install carbon monoxide detectors to prevent these deaths.

There are various types of carbon monoxide detectors ranging from battery operated units, plug-ins and hard-wired CO alarms. The life span of each type of unit was also taken into consideration throughout the study.

The conclusive recommendations of the study are that it is advisable to install a carbon monoxide detector and that the installation of such a unit is cost effective. This study also makes recommendations that boats and caravans that have combustion appliances should also install a carbon monoxide detector.

It is expected that the Buidling Regulations will shortly be updated to reflect these recommendations. We will keep you informed.

The tragic death of two young children that occurred as the result of a faulty boiler installation in Corfu in 2006 has been highlighted again as two Thomas Cook employees appeared in court accused of manslaughter.

The deaths of Christianne and Robert Shepherd, aged seven and six, was caused through carbon monoxide leaking from a boiler and seeping through the walls of their holiday bungalow in Corfu.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that occurs from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. It is essential to have appliances checked on a yearly basis to ensure that they are in good working order and are not emitting this poisonous gas.

Alarms are available to help detect if carbon monoxide is present, enabling the occupants to escape before the gas renders them unconcious. These devices are inexpensive and can be taken with you when you go on holiday, giving you piece of mind wherever you are.

You can read more about the current prosecution against Thomas Cook’s employees.

A family living in Hill Lane, Blackrod had a lucky escape from a fire at their home thanks to an early dog walker on Saturday, 19 June 2010.

The fire is said to have started in a metal outhouse attached to the house. The flames had already spread to cause damage to the rear door and had caused the upstairs bedroom window to crack, where the couples four year old daughter was asleep.

The house was not fitted with any working smoke alarms and had it not been for the passerby alerting the family to the danger, the outcome could have been devastating.

Do not leave your fire safety to the chance of a passing dog walker, install smoke alarms and ask for advice from your fire brigade. Many local fire brigades offer free safety checks and may be able to offer a free smoke alarm.
