In an emergency, the hooks of the ladder are placed over the window sill and the chain is lowered out of the window. The escape ladder is then ready for for your descend. Distance pieces fixed on a number of rungs will keep your feet safely off the wall.
The ladder deploys tangle-free and includes 5 pairs of distance pieces for the 15 ft ladders, or 8 pairs for the 25 and 15 pairs for the 45 foot ladders. The distance pieces are screwed on by the customer in positions best suited for the building in question.
Please note that a minimum window opening width of 13" (33cm) is required for the installation of this ladder.
The Saf-Escape ladder selection covers most wall thickness ranges. The hooks come in three sizes to fit up to 10 inch, 10 to 14 inch and 14 to 18 inch wall thickness. However, excessive sill overhangs (more than 3 inches) might lead to an incorrect fit of the ladder. If in doubt, please contact us.

Q.Referring to points A, B, C and D on the figure, my measurements are: A: 47 cm, B: 3.5 cm, C: 15cm and D: 3cm. You can see that C (on the inside) is quite big. Should I still go for the 25-35cm ladder?
A.I have read your email and looked at the specs and you do need a 25-35cm spec ladder.
Q.I am interested in the Saf-Escape ladder from Franklin but would only be able to use it in the bathroom as these windows are the only ones hinged from the top. The other windows have fixings that would prevent the ladder from sitting straight. The bathroom windows are 15" wide and allow a top to bottom opening of 27" when open, although the actual distance from top to bottom is approx. 31".
They have no sill on the inside, the tiles simply make a right angle. Is the sill needed to hold the ladder in place? Could you explain how it holds in place please?
The wall thickness is 12" and the window frame is max. 35mm high. Can you please tell me if your ladder would be OK and would it stay in place if we had to go sideways out of the window (because they are only 15" wide).
A.The window opening is wide enough (min width 13" required) and high enough for the Safescape ladder to allow a person to squeeze out of the window, although this does of course depend from the age and fitness of the person. The ladder does not require a sill on the inside or outside. In actual fact, the ladder has been designed to spare out the sill, as most sills are of insufficient strength to hold the weight of a person. The hook that goes over the wall is shaped like a monkey's paw, with the fingertips resting against the inside wall, the thumb resting against the outside wall and the palm of the hand against the bottom part of the window frame.
When leaving the room, it is usually best to straddle the sill sideways and to find a foothold with the leg already outside. You then need to pull your torso and other leg through the opening. Failing that you would have to leave with the feet first, making sure that you do not pull the hook loose.
With the wall being 12" thick you need the hook version 10-14".
I recommend that you try the Safescape ladder and if you should struggle with the size of the opening you can return the ladder for a refund or an exchange against other models such as the Amigo escape ladder.
Q.Hi,
We're looking at your portable fire escape ladders (size 15ft for wall thickness 10-14"), but we have measured the height the window frame raises above the window sill (your measurement D) and it is 70mm. Your instructions indicate it shouldn't be more than 30mm.
Please advise if there is a portable ladder that will suit.
A.Please send us a sketch of the window, sill and wall with dimensions and we will transfer this into full scale, allowing us to transpose our various hook sizes over the image to see if one of our hooks might be suitable.
Q.I am looking at the SAF-Escape ladder for my new loft extension.
It has a dorma window with about 2m of sloping roof then 8m to the ground.
The window wall is timber frane with plasterboard inside and slate outside
I think the 13.7m version would be suitable, would you agree?
Also as I only need 10m I presume it is OK to chop off the excess?
A.I am a little concerned about sliding the chain ladder over the 2m section of roof and over the guttering without tangeling up or getting stuck. It is difficult to control the safe deployment of the Safescape fire escape ladder if the gutter is out of reach from the window. The Rollo escape ladder is much better suited in these circumstances, as the ladder pack is rolled up and just 'shoots' over the roof and guttering when deployed. It's slightly short, however, and this needs to be carefully considered. By the way, yes, both Safescape or Rollo fire escape ladders can be shortened.
Q.Dear Sir/Madam,
I am looking at buying an escape ladder for our bedroom but I'm not sure what type we need - the windows we have are 1970s-80s (ish!) double glazing with thin aluminium frames. They are large but are made up of a fixed pane at the bottom and the top pane opens out (hinged at the top) a bit like the 'awning' type in this image: http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/holooucr/images/66E-4.gif Thus the ladder would need to hook onto the strip running across the middle (top frame of the bottom pane) and I'm concerned that the frame and glass wouldn't be strong enough. Can you recommend anything to overcome this, or do you feel that the glass would be able to withstand it? Thank you in anticipation.
A.Hello
Thank you for your enquiry. With applications where only the top part of the window will open, we do not recommend that the fire escape ladder is hung over the bottom pane in order to deploy out of the window. In this instance we would recommend that the bottom pane is broken in the event of emergency and then the ladder is deployed. The link below shows different emergency escape hammers available on our website:
http://www.safelincs.co.uk/Emergency-Escape-Hammers/
As you are unable to test a ladder hook size for your application with the fixed bottom window pane in place, we would usually recommend for you to consider a ladder like the Kletterfix with a wall mounted bar. The ladder itself is portable, but the bar is fitted to the internal wall underneath the window. The ladder can then be clipped onto the bar and deployed out of the window in an emergency (once the bottom pane has been broken). Please note that the Kletterfix bar can only be fitted to a wall of solid brick construction. A plasterboard wall would not be able to hold the bar or ladder.
I hope this helps.
Kind Regards
